Mountain whitefish are considered by many fishermen to be unwanted, a competitor species that snatches up freshly deposited salmon and trout eggs. The truth of the matter is the mountain whitefish helps promote a healthy river system, fanning the sandy bottom to stir up the gravels and feed on aquatic insects. This pair shared the water with a immature Chinook salmon and a small steelhead, sometimes laying side by side.join the fish and watch them one on one. Fishermen only see half of the story. To really get the full picture one must get wet, get cold, get out and explore your local rivers! This roving school of Mountain Whitefish stays well clear of the passing tourist, but does not seem to mind the GoPro. They patrolled the depths looking for a free meal in this clear mountain stream, I only saw glimpses of them when swimming. In reality this was the only action in a 5 minute remote setup. The camera was placed on the bottom and allowed to shoot whatever happens. I like this setup the best. Only when visiting beneath the waves does the complex world of these distant relatives become clear. Bull trout, cutthroat trout and mountain whitefish share a somewhat common lineage and life history, yet all three species could not be more different. These differences are cast aside when all these species gather together to share the same water. Music: JasonShaw 'Autumn Sunset' www.audionautix.com

A bit of a departure from the usual as I take on several miles of a wild tributary to my local river. Having only visited the Lil' Wen once before back in 2009. This time I manage to hit this little visited valley during the peak of the sockeye spawn. Thousands of red salmon pairing up and fighting it out for the best gravel. My hopes of finding fish were vastly exceeded when I had terrific encounters with Sockeye, cutthroat, rainbow, bull and mountain whitefish. This slideshow was created for the 2014 Summer Framed Photography contest. I did shoot some video, but this time enjoy the photos instead. Fishermen: Sorry, this stream is permanently closed to angling.

The Bitterroot is fishing well. Yes, of course, the March Browns were hatching. But, in news I care about more, streamer fishing is picking up. So well that, a tiny whitefish decided to join the party by hooking itself on an articulated sex dungeon. Some nice browns and rainbows were also caught. music: A Tribe Called Quest "Luck of Lucien" http://yukongoesfishing.blogspot.com
