        • Loop propagation without force at the rear end of the rod leg

It has been said that for the loop to propagate it is necessary to keep a force acting on the back portion of the rod leg. When no shooting line that force would come from the caster holding the line; when shooting line the force would come from the friction between the running line and the rod rings. Here is a simple experiment with an Echo MPR rod and yarn attached to a 1.5 meter long 0.25mm monofilament released after loop formation. Due to the thin and very short mono, and its release from the caster's hand, friction between mono and guides is negligible. Once a loop has been stablished it will continue unrolling if there is enough energy for that. We don't need a force at the rear end of the rod leg for the loop to propagate, just enough difference in speed between fly leg and rod leg.

John and Candice were interviewed by Mary Lucia at 89.3 The Current the day before their sold-out shows at The Triple Rock. Before the interview, John performed Act of Quiet Desperation and Setted, which we filmed in 16mm, the latter of which is presented here. Re this particular video: I used Handbrake to extract this video from a DVD (because I didn't have easy access to the source), so there are a few errors (audio pops) and of course the image quality is woefully substandard, but I wanted to put this up somewhere so people could see it. The telecine copy of the film print is astounding. I'll eventually replace this clip with a clean, hi-res version.
