Negitter Nachipo is a peer mother at the Thyolo District Hospital in Malawi. Peer mothers are counsellors to women in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) program. "I can do this job well because I have had the same experiences as the patients. There was a time I was pregnant and I am also HIV-positive. I went through all the stages that helped me prevent infecting my child." When a pregnant mother is on effective treatment, the HIV transmission rate to her child drops from up to 40% to less than 5%. However, not all women have access to testing and treatment. MSF teams support more than 341,600 people on antiretroviral treatment in over 20 countries. In late 2013, MSF handed over the PMTCT program in Thyolo to Malawi’s health system. Jennipher is a mother of four and a patient in the prevention-of-mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) program in Thyolo, Malawi. "My husband was very supportive every time I was pregnant. When I got pregnant the last time, we went together as husband and wife to the first antenatal visit. We both got tested and they told us we were both HIV positive." When a pregnant mother is on effective treatment, the HIV transmission rate to her child drops from up to 40% to less than 5%. What if he tells me this is the end of our marriage?’" When a pregnant mother is on effective treatment, the HIV transmission rate to her child drops from up to 40% to less than 5%.
