Dino Fallone was a student of mine. I learned he had a band, so I invited them to play for students enrolled in a course called the Digital Image. CAS111. The assignment was to cover the concert... photograph the band, the crowd, the surroundings, as a photojournalist would for next days newspaper. The turnaround is fast. Shoot, download, tweak, and turn in. Students have an opportunity to get up really close, to move around and find interesting vantage points, to keep their eyes open for interesting shots... Experiential learning is one important component in my teaching -- fun for the students without loosing any of the didactic objectives set out to be covered.

my artprize project was included in "a double life," an exhibit in shanghai happening as we speak... for obvious reasons, the real piece could not travel... instead the clay model and a video of the installation in grand rapids shot by my friend pete johnston was on display... here some footage from the opening... yan yao and mido (hosts supreme) and welovead organized the exhibit. and i had the opportunity to attend!

my project "gravity matters little" was part of an exhibit in shanghai. i traveled there (nov 16 to 23) i was also invited to present to a class of students at shanghai normal university... normal? me? nah! what was discombobulating was to learn to pace myself to allow the translator to do his thing... for a "stream of consciousness," dyslexic kind of person, that poses some problems... where was i? :-)

this faux animation was the last part of my 'touch wood' installation hosted by the grand rapids art museum during artprize 2011... somewhat of an afterthought... it was intended to add a touch of humor to a piece which was starting to get unintentionally too serious... i showed barkman on a raw 7" lcd monitor positioned on top of a pile of miniature wooden house... by raw i mean a monitor with board and wires exposed -- not in a case... you might get a glimpse of it in http://vimeo.com/29423458 or in michael daniel's documentary about 'touch wood' https://vimeo.com/40315801 and yes, it was pacman with a twist ... other related videos are http://vimeo.com/29423458 http://vimeo.com/29423204 http://vimeo.com/29038195

explorations for the branding and website for the media sandbox ... low tech attempt to incorporating motion, rotations, changing of plane, a possible game design... the sandbox S evolved from opening a box... you know, the outside of the box line... it also has [unintended] visual ties to the spartan michigan state S... visit us at msumediasanbox.com the website will be evolving, so will we :-)
