The Cascade Mountains are fairly new to the North American continent, and like many youngsters, they're very active. Everybody knows about Mt. St. Helens, which most recently erupted in 2004-2008 and spectacularly in 1980. But if you live in Tacoma or Seattle, you know that Mt. Rainier is rated by the USGS as the most dangerous volcanic feature in the lower 48. We ride to both, and capture the beauty... and the beast.

This is becoming something of a July 4th Tradition. Hike up the snowfield until the snow starts to hit its prime softness, then cook some brats, enjoy some beer, and then ski down. Conditions were better than last year, and we tried a new route. Had to hop some glide cracks quickly, but it was a great ski down. Get the song! https://soundcloud.com/takugotbeats/we-were-in-love

On a bit of a whim I decided to see what Sunrise would have to offer, having done the Muir Snowfield one too many times and needing a tour close to home. Sunrise wasn't open yet. We got an early start from White River instead and headed up a trail of mixed dirt and snow until we arrived on Sunrise where we donned skins and headed up as far as we could before having to turn back due to time. The run was a bit sort, but the day was great and the snow was fairly decent for mid June.
