      • Derek Bermel: Context is Key

        from NewMusicBox Added 451 0 0

Whatever genre of music he is engaging in, Derek Bermel is always mindful of its context. That mindfulness, coupled with an insatiable musical curiosity, manifests itself whether he is composing music for an orchestra, playing clarinet with various chamber ensembles, singing in his own R&B band, or jamming with traditional musicians from around the world. In a lengthy conversation with Frank J. Oteri, Bermel reflected on the many mentors he has had over the years, technical details about musical notation and orchestration, plus today's post-genre musical environment and the possible downside of living in a world where everything is available online. This video is for my English 322 Multigenre Project. It deconstructs the idea of utopia by focusing on the complications of enforcing what is "right." This issue is presented in T. H. White's The Once and Future King, in which King Arthur struggles with Might vs. Right. The other pieces in my project can be found on moonfruit, as well as a "Dear Reader" letter explaining this project in more detail.

XsoUnd follows the trials and tribulations of one frustrated mouse-boy looking to find solace and harmony in the infinite sounds of ultra-multi-genre music. Unable to find a connection in the real world he creates a group of fluorescent-coloured, rainbow plastic mannequins to share his experiences with. This gutter-dark/technicolour journey carries him through the spectrums of sounds and sights where he remains distracted in limbo... until one day a mouse-girl enters his life… 'There is a way that nature speaks, that land speaks. Most of the time we are simply not patient enough, quiet enough, to pay attention to the story.' XsoUnd II coming soon. A project by UpperCUT & Mister X

The concept is simple: one visual art show around the ideea of listening any kind of music in a single night. We prefer to think that not any kind of music, but all good examples from all the genres. An ultra-multi-genre audio-video-art night.
