        • Glenn Lowry | In Between Places: Contemporary Art and the Middle East

For nearly 20 years, art historian Glenn Lowry has directed New York’s Museum of Modern Art, the most influential modern art museum in the world. He came to MoMA as an acclaimed specialist in Islamic art. Lowry returns to his scholarly roots for this lecture. Contemporary art in the Middle East can be seen variously as the continuation of the historical tradition of Islamic Art or as a radical break with the past, as a market driven phenomenon fueled by the wealth of a new Gulf-based clientele, or a searing critique of the social and political conditions of the Middle East created by diasporic artists who have been stripped of their sense of home. Lowry will explore how such artists as Wael Shawky, Shirin Nishat, Walid Raad, Rania Stephan, and Shahzia Sikander navigate highly charged issues through film-making, photography, painting, and animation.

              from Second Story / Added

In 2001, the Museum of Modern Art acquired more than 300 iconic photographs from Thomas Walther’s private collection. Spanning the first half of the 20th century, these works represent a period of unprecedented photographic creativity as new techniques and technologies became widely available. Object:Photo brings these photographs and the research of MoMA’s curatorial team to life in the form of four visualizations that allow users to explore both the collection and the artists represented in a variety of contexts. “Mapping Photographs” plots the collection geographically and identifies additional points of interest (exhibitions, schools, etc.), uncovering hubs of activity. “Comparing Photographs” spotlights the various techniques and materials represented in the collection and allows users to compare individual timelines for each technique. Visitors uncover unexpected links between photographers through “Connecting Artists,” and “Mapping Artists’ Lives” displays biographies geographically, allowing users to see where particular individuals worked and may have crossed paths with others. Supplemental pages detail extensive research the museum conducted on the photographs and their creators as well as exhibitions, publications, schools, and industry hubs from the period. http://secondstory.com/project/object-photo
