Lemac stopped by the Aladdin booth at NAB 2015 and looked at this very impressive bendy light from Aladdin called the Bi-Flex. A great choice for a small, lightweight and powerful lighting tool for many applications like: portable interview light or to hide in narrow spaces like elevators, cars or even inside objects for product photography. The light quality is outstanding with a CRI and TLCI of 97.

You may have seen my earlier blog on how to put AES audio into your camera using Sound Devices gear. I stopped by the Sound Devices booth at NAB to learn about their new 688 Field Mixer and its SL-6 Super Slot powering and wireless system. This combination makes for a powerful multi-track recording system. It’s perfect for owner/operators who may need to record their own audio, in addition to their camera duties, and it is especially helpful in situations where there are numerous mics and talent to be recorded. The SL6 is bolted together on top of the 688 and with wireless receivers hooked into the SL6, everything can be controlled through the 688 Field Mixer. The 688 features MixAssist, which is a very intelligent speech gate that automatically turns off mics that are not being talked into and then turns them back on when they are in use. This easy-to-use feature maintains a consistent background level when multiple microphones are in use and opens only one mic per sound source for the best speech reproduction. With SL-6, up to three wireless receivers and the 688 can be powered off one battery. There is also a DC output on the back of the unit. Today I met with Juan Martinez, the Senior Product Manager at Sony, to check out the new Sony FS7 with Version 2.0 Firmware that launched just before NAB. The new firmware has three important new features: 4-channel audio input, AVCHD Recording Mode, and support for ProRes 422 HQ and ProRes 422. I also got a sneak peak of the 3.0 Firmware updates that will implement 2K center crop to enable the use of Super 16mm lenses directly and 2/3 lenses with a low loss adapter. I also got a look at the X300 Monitor, Sony’s 4K OLED display which has an HDR mode, and enables you to take the output of a camera in S Log and display it properly, giving you massive range If you want to see the full post, visit our blog: http://blog.abelcine.com/2015/04/15/nab-2015-sony-fs7-monitor-updates/

AbelCine is now an authorized reseller for RED Digital Cinema, so I was excited to check out the brand new, just announced WEAPON at the RED booth. The latest version in the RED DRAGON family, the WEAPON is the smallest camera in the lineup and features the same sensor as the DRAGON. Andy visited the Panasonic booth at NAB to look at some new products. The first one is the VariCam Extension Unit, a modular system with a recorder and a head that can be separated. This extension unit allows you to send the data from the head back into the recorder and allows you to go up to 5 meters away. Andy also spoke to Bernie Mitchell, Digital Media Evangelist at Panasonic, about the new DVX200. The DVX200 is a run-n-gun 4K camera with a newly designed 4/3 sensor. It records 4K/60p on SD cards. This camera will be shipping in Fall 2015. Andy also looked at the VariCam 35’s low light capabilities. The VariCam 35 has dual native ISO modes of both 800 and 5000, and at the 5000 mode you can get a really clean image. Today Megan met with Kaur Kallas, Co-Founder of Digital Sputnik, to talk about their new DS LED System, the DS 3. The DS 3 is a modular system, so you can put the modules together or use them separately with one power supply driving up to three modules. The RGBW module has comparable output to 100W HMI or 500W Tungsten, with 16-bit, 4-channel, high precision dimming allowing for an array of possible effective color combinations. There is no limit as to how many modules you can assemble together. The DS 3 will be available starting in June at a price point around $8,000, which includes three lights, power supply, case and accessories If you want to see the full post, visit our blog: http://blog.abelcine.com/2015/04/15/nab-2015-digital-sputnik-ds-led-system/

Megan stopped by the Codex booth today to chat with Sarah Priestnall, VP Market Development, about their new VariCam V-RAW Recorder. Designed specifically for the Panasonic VariCam 35, the unit attaches directly to the back of the camera. The V-RAW Recorder captures uncompressed Varicam-RAW (V-RAW) 4K at up to 120 fps using the new 1TB or 2TB Capture Drive 2.0 media. These Codex Capture Drives offer 52 minutes or 1 hour 45 minutes of run time at 24 fps respectively and easily accommodates higher frame rates. The V-RAW Recorder uses the standard Codex workflow, including the Vault Platform and Vault Review, which now run on Mac OS. Megan also took a look at the Codex Action Cam, which is an extremely compact HD, 12-bit raw camera that is ideal for stunts or car rigs. Because two cameras can record to the same control unit, they are great for 3D, virtual reality, or any project that requires multiple cameras. The Codex booth also has a tech demo of the new Multi-Camera Recorder that accepts inputs from eight Action Cams or four ALEXA Mini’s. Check out the blog video above for more on all these products.
