I took this material from Riverside Way alongside the River Soar in Leicester, UK, as a test of my Panasonic TM300 camera. The building of the National Space Centre is quite striking and has plenty of odd lines, curves and textures to challenge the camera's AVCHD codec. Light conditions were clear, but it was late in the year. Camera set to "Digital Cinema" mode, i.e. 1080/25p (in AVCHD interlaced wrapper). This was all in manual exposure, 1/50th second shutter, with iris adjusted between f/5.6 and f/9.6 from shot to shot. The touch screen is really fiddly in the field. Auto focus used throughout. Auto white balance. Image stabilisation off. Not the most rigid tripod - Velbon Ultra Maxi F with an old Manfrotto 128LP fluid head! Especially wanted to see what jitter looked like with vertical and horizontal pans (chose the low shutter speed as I though it would give best result), but was also interested in how bad the jaggies would be with the not-quite-vertical and not-quite-horizontal lines of the building. Am using Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD PE 10 on an i7 Windows 7 PC (specially built after wading around in glue with earlier machines trying to edit AVCHD). Previously used EditStudio, which was great for DV, but cannot easily deal with HD. Am getting used to the Sony software now, and really like it, but there's a lot more keystrokes to learn before I am really productive. My render of choice at the moment is 720/25p which seems to adequately exploit the image capability of the camera, and is viewable on most PCs. That's what I've uploaded. Renders to DVD quality have been very disappointing, with horrible jaggies. This is my first Vimeo post, and I'm curious to see what their encoding does to it. Please turn off the sound if my noodling offends you - it's only there because the location ambient sound was too rustly to use.

Take a spin with this gem: Winner of a Domie in 2008 for dome design. It's a shot from the fulldome film "Astronaut' by the National Space Centre in the UK, a notorious fulldome producer brave and talented enough to toss some humor into the dome and take on crazy shots like this one.
