Unwilling to accept the bitter truth, we decided to stray from the beaten path, to places that seem to encapsulate endless summer, with plentiful and beautiful fish eagerly attacking dry flies. Thats right, we're talking about native brook trout streams; one of Rhode Islands most underutilized and under-appreciated fisheries. With little to no fishing pressure, plenty of gorgeous native and wild fish, and consistent action on the surface, sometimes we forget why we ever fish anywhere else. I think most fly fishers would agree the places and the journey are often just as, if not more rewarding than landing big fish. A recent weekend at favorite trout stream in the shadow of Mt. Ranier and Mt. Adams was a reminder of that. This stream draws me back every year. Partly because the indigenous nature of the trout and also because there is an almost palpable energy there that always create a unique experience. We slept on top of a high mountain and were privy to some spectacular sunrises, sunsets and an array of other views that warranted their own segment. During the day we fished the creek several thousand feet down in the valley. All footage was gathered the same weekend. Music: Dave Stamey "McGee Creek" "Mountain Wind" "Come Ride With Me"

Late fall fishing with streamers for Metolius Bull Trout. You gotta love trout that eat flies the size of a bird. Every fall I spend several days hucking large chunky flesh patterns and whitefish frauds to the native bulls. Although the bulls will gladly eat small nymphs all year, I'd rather Go Big or Go Home when it comes to bulls so I concentrate my fishing for this great native trout in the fall during the kokanee spawn. Maligned for many years, bull trout have hung on despite misguided management of this apex predator. For many years there were government-led extermination programs including bounties and poisoning. More recently, I have heard these fish referred to as "boot trout" by some. Yeah, they won't give you six cartwheels and your backing but is that why we fly fish. Healthy rivers with big wild meat-eating trout with fins the size of your hand. That's good enough for me. Music: Smoke and Mirrors by RJD2 Thanks to Tom and Mike for assistance in this video.

We could barely feel our bodies, but a midday black stonefly hatch brought a couple fish to the surface and we quickly forgot just how cold it was. Spring dry fly fishing on the Metolius River in Oregon. Friends, this piece showcases the Metolius River as it makes the slow transition from winter into spring. A quiet time before the busy summer tourist season. All filming done during April 2011 with an entry level HD JVC Everio camcorder. Edited with Windows Movie Maker. Video is heavy on scenery and light on trout fishing action. Pretty typical of a normal day on the Metolius. If it is fishing action that you are looking for check out my newer videos. Slack line casts and tight line takes for all.
