I produced and edited this in early 2010 from material that I had shot between 2007-2010. Pre and post testing indicated a very favourable response with recruitment age males and the wider community in terms of supporting the Afghan National Army (ANA)

I spent most of August 2010 with Alpha Battery of the US Army's 1-320th Field Artillery Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, at Combat Outpost Nolen, small base in Arghandab District, Kandahar Province. This video details an operation to a village only a few hundred meters away from COP Nolen to locate a Taliban weapons cache. Arghandab District saw some of the heaviest fighting of 2010, the first year of the so-called Afghan "surge," and this video offers a visual and auditory experience of the difficulties of patrolling in the thickly vegetated Arghandab River Valley, a key smuggling route studded with improvised explosive devices, and, until 2010, only sparsely occupied with NATO forces. Originally produced for my interactive multimedia web project, Assignment Afghanistan (www.assignmentafghanistan.org) with support from the Virginia Quarterly Review.
