For most Documentarians, a camera, mic, and tripod are the most important equipment. This Alaskan couple first requires fatbikes, packrafts, and warm sleeping bags to make their film, as they travel hundreds of miles over the rugged terrain of the Alaskan wilderness. Through mosquito tsunamis and sub-zero temperatures, Bjorn and Kim discover firsthand just how enormous the influences of open-pit gold mining in the roadless wilderness could be. Life in the 'Bush' is hard by many standards. A subsistence fisherman realizes that the salmon run will not be enough to support his family. An Iditarod dog musher takes a wrong turn and winds up 50 miles off track in the middle of the night. Meanwhile, a multi-national mining conglomerate seeks feasible profits in a place that is hundreds of miles from existing infrastructure. 'Where the Heck is Donlin?' Most Alaskans have never even heard of the Donlin Gold Mine, despite the fact that this proposal would dwarf every gold mine in the state's history. Information on this project is scarce, and failed to answer many of Bjorn and Kim's critical questions. So they took their inquiry to the trail, to meet people see the land, and learn about the social, economic, and environmental impacts of large-scale mineral development in this rural region. It turns out that Donlin is possibly just around the bend, but what exactly this spells for the fate of the Kuskokwim region, and Alaska at large, is still very vague. The purpose of this film is to ignite conversation, raise awareness, and promote critical thinking as decisions are being made now that will affect future generations for centuries and perhaps millennia to come. Visit the project website at www.94elements.com MAKING THE FILM "A filmmaker never chooses a story completely by chance. Many people have probably lived this kind of disturbing moment where we’re confronted with an invisible enemy inside our bodies. Suddenly our future seems to depend on a cloudy little white splotch in the middle of a gray zone of an MRI scan. When the time comes to try and decipher the mysterious images an age-old fear wakes up and its exuberance and predictability make the situation almost comical. A few months before shooting this film I found myself in the same situation as Levan, the film’s protagonist. Fascinated, I observed the interior of my body on the hospital computer screen while the doctor used his doctor-speak language to explain what the problem was. His foreign words were frightening and set my imagination wild. I felt myself being transformed into a scientific object without holding the keys to understand the importance of what I was seeing or hearing. In this state of mind, I wanted to film this tragicomic moment of sudden metamorphosis, when the anguish grows to gigantic proportions, taking over our entourage as well. I learned how the element Gadolinium is used to provide the contrast in the MRI images – these same images that represent such hope or despair for us as patients. I then set out to find a character about to have an IRM scan, hoping his reactions would be similar to my own. And I found Levan. And the whole time I was filming I kept thinking that Levan could be me, that he could also be you, or someone we know. Nino Kirtadze - Filmmaker

That is a tag worthy of the modern human, a voracious machine engineered by the so called industrial and agricultural revolutions, which should rank as the worst human blunders since the advent of money and, of course the curse of all, religion! No other living organism laboriously lumbers everything that is natural and is absolutely free into a never-ending array of artefacts and then sell them, just to be dumped back on earth even before these stop being useful. Very soon, there will be no space left on earth that is not littered with the muck we dump, and similarly, no place on earth will be left unscarred by our irresponsible and short-termist plundering. As the destruction of our planet continues unabated, and even accelerated, well into another century, it is becoming increasingly clearer that humans are actually mad, for no sane person destroys his or her own home. The madness however will end when you will be riding a 100-metre oceanic wave, if you manage to surf it that is. The day nature unleashes her fury is going to be much sooner than you think! Why can’t we comprehend the simple truth that everything nature offers is free for all living organisms, and that all she wants from us is to share it responsibly like all other creatures blatantly do? We are living in exceptional times. Scientists tell us that we have 10 years to change the way we live, avert the depletion of natural resources and the catastrophic evolution of the Earth's climate. The stakes are high for us and our children. Everyone should take part in the effort, and HOME has been conceived to take a message of mobilization out to every human being. For this purpose, HOME needs to be free. A patron, the PPR Group, made this possible. EuropaCorp, the distributor, also pledged not to make any profit because Home is a non-profit film. The ‘making-of’ the video is available at this link: https://vimeo.com/50481439 My Phd research (done at the University of Padua, thanks to the supervision of prof. dr. Laura Secco) tries to develop a methodology for the evaluation of good local governance of natural resources in rural areas, and in particular it focuses mainly on three aspects: i) the definition of the concept of ‘good governance’ of natural resources at local level in rural areas, through the division of this huge term in key-dimensions and more concrete sub-dimensions; ii) the creation of a simple and expeditious set of indicators to be applied at local level to measure the good governance generated by the assessed organization; iii) the use of suitable instruments for the work, and special attention is given to social network analysis for the study of networks among local stakeholders. In shooting the video, I focused my attention on three keywords: governance – indicators – network (as you can tell by our homemade soundtrack!). The dance tries to explain these keywords: local stakeholders benefit from the use of natural resources, but if not well managed by a local organization/institution their impact becomes negative; it is necessary to create links among the main stakeholders, both public and private (which are here divided in 7 categories), through good governance on a local scale; the created network allows more harmonic dialogue, but an assessment (or self-assessment) is required through suitable indicators. My special thanks go to all my friends and colleagues who contributed to the project: the whole work involved 24 people (plus enthusiastic supporters)!! Enrico suggested I take part in the contest; Giulio and Mut created with me the dynamic of dances, and did the shooting; Lorenzo Dalloz Valeria and part of the Yamà band (Lucio, Giulio, Francesca and Roland) wrote the music; Sara and Mut helped me chose the park setting; Chicca designed the tree faces and Eva coordinated the costumes research; Lorenzo Lucia Mauro Linda Giacomo Livio Lucio transformed themselves in perfect anthropomorphic trees; Francesca Chicca Serena Elena Tommi Susi Emma Eva and Marianna danced with me; and Giulio worked hard to help me produce the final video!
