Robin Moore is a landscape architect, design researcher and lead author of Nature Play and Learning Places—the national guidelines published with the National Wildlife Federation in 2014. Robin Moore holds degrees in architecture (London University) and urban planning (MIT), and for most of his career has worked in the field of landscape architecture as educator, researcher, and consultant. Moore is an international authority on the design of children's play and learning environments, user needs research, and participatory public open space design. His designs for children's spaces in the USA include the well-known Environmental Yard, in Berkeley, California (recipient in 1988 of the Outstanding Contribution to the Practice of Design Research by the Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA). Louise Chawla is a professor emerita at the University of Boulder’s Environmental Design Program and also works with Growing Up Boulder (GUB), a local child and youth engagement program through CU. Both bring a lifetime of professional experience on the importance of nature play opportunities in the urban setting. Louise Chawla is a Professor in the Environmental Design Program in the University of Colorado Boulder. She is Associate Director of the Children, Youth and Environments Center for Community Engagement (CYE Center) and Co-editor of the journal Children, Youth and Environments. As a member of the Executive Committee of Growing Up Boulder, she helps lead a partnership between the CYE Center, Boulder Valley School District, and the City of Boulder’s Departments of Community Planning and Sustainability, Parks and Recreation, and Transportation, along with numerous community organizations, to integrate the ideas of children and youth into urban planning and design. As International Coordinator of the Growing Up in Cities program of UNESCO from 1996-2006, she revived an initiative that has involved young people in cities around the world in evaluating and improving their urban communities. She has written two books and many book chapters and journal articles on children and nature, children in cities, and the development of active care for the natural world. Panel Discussion John McCluskey - Principal, Horizons K-8 School John joined The Horizons K-8 community in August 2012. John comes most recently to us from the Jefferson County Open School in Lakewood, CO where he served as the Assistant Principal. John has worked as a teacher and administrator in various innovative and progressive schools and non-profit settings since 1989. He is also a trainer and consultant to schools in Colorado and around the country with the PassageWorks Institute, based here in Boulder and with the Colorado Center for Council Practice which he co-founded in 1996. Kerry White, RLA, ASLA, LEED TM - Principal at Urban Play Studio Principal Kerry White has over fourteen years of design and project management experience. Her collaborative design efforts include a collection of public projects, varying in size, type, and style. From school playgrounds and educational campuses, to neighborhood parks and regional athletic facilities, her creativity and technical competence result in unique, fun, safe, and appropriate places for play and gathering. Incorporating strong communication skills into her philosophy, Kerry facilitates the consensus and coming together of neighbors, user groups, agency staff, and design teams, so all are working toward common project goals. Her extensive cost estimation and construction documentation experience ensure projects are on time and on budget. Equally important, her project designs incorporate solutions that are environmentally sensitive and reflect a sense of place. Kerry has the expertise to take concepts and ideas to a beautifully built solution. Tori Derr, Senior Instructor, University of Colorado Program of Environmental Design and Growing Up Boulder Coordinator Victoria Derr is a Senior Instructor in the Program in Environmental Design at the University of Colorado, Boulder. For more than 20 years, Victoria has engaged communities in participatory research, design and planning for vibrant and resilient communities. She works closely with Growing Up Boulder to coordinate children and youth engagement in design and planning with the City of Boulder.
