Drawing on the rich symbolism of the industrial relics that scatter the existing site and using advanced imaging technologies, the new buildings seek to ‘complete’ lost artefacts and spaces, giving a tectonic presence to the fading memories of this original US Industrial Powerhouse. A Museum without walls. In contrast to the ‘bull’ of Wall Street, the Brooklyn Navy Yard is portrayed as the ‘ballerina’. Marrying the potent historical imagery of the Naval Yard with the charged economic potential of the city, Emir has designed a coherent embracing body that can contain this sprawling and fragmented vestigial landscape.

          • "Their Indelible Service" - PREVIEW

“Their Indelible Service – A History of Women in the United States Military” is a documentary focused on raising the viewers awareness of the vital role American women played in the history of the United States Military. This is not a series about the ‘women behind the men’, but rather it is about the women themselves and the historic role they played in securing our freedoms – then and now. Officially, the history of women in the U.S. Military began in the 20th century. It was at this time, particularly in 1901 that the Army Nurse Corps was established. While history records nearly 500,000 women who served in wartime, as well as 1.2 million women veterans documented as of 1990, a deeper understanding is required as to the untold numbers of women whose service has been so important to the U.S. Military since this country’s founding. It is a story begging to be told – a story of patriots who have been invisible for far too long...patriots who's sacrifices shows that valor knows no gender. These sometimes forgotten heroines, from caring for the sick and wounded to fighting along side their male counterparts, shared the hardships of war right along with the troops in the field. This documentary will travel back in time to the first recorded instances of women whose service to this country has been so invaluable. We will examine the roles these women played in the 18th and 19th centuries; those brave women whose part within the “citizen soldier” military was all but invisible. However, we will bring to light the significant factor that these women provided from colonial times through the early 20th Century. These women provided four categories of service to this nation’s military as camp followers, nurses, suppliers and warriors. Through historical records and personal interviews, this production will shed new light on how these women lived, loved, suffered and triumphed over all that war entailed. This project will ultimately bring to the forefront examples of exactly how these women aided their country in time of war. Their selfless sacrifices and the parts they played in national unity have gone largely unrecognized. “Their Indelible Service” will further illustrate that through the efforts and sacrifices of these brave women, the U.S. Military not only greatly benefited from their service, but these women set an extremely admirable example for today’s military woman.
