This animation shows the 3D shape of near-Earth asteroid 2000 ET70 with the Statue of Liberty for scale. The 3D model was derived from a series of 15 m (45 ft) resolution radar images taken in February 2012 using the Arecibo and Goldstone radar systems. 2000 ET70 is designated as a Potentially Hazardous Asteroid. Its close approach to Earth at the time of observations was 17 times the distance to the Moon. Visit http://science.nasa.gov/ for breaking science news. On Feb. 15th an asteroid about half the size of a football field will fly past Earth closer than many man-made satellites. Since regular sky surveys began in the 1990s, astronomers have never seen an object so big come so close to our planet.
