Neno Belchev "Positive Message ( Lord of the Rainbow )" 1min 2012 Next NYC Broadcast: Thursday 7/18/2013 | Channel 2 | 2:00 am | Manhattan Neighborhood Network Acid Rain is excited to present work by Bulgarian artist, Neno Belchev. His video was chosen from over one-hundred open call submissions, during our first ever Open Call for Submissions. Artists were asked to submit videos to be shown as the final episode of Acid Rain, related to their concept of "The End"; a cinematic finale, or a fatalistic resolution. "Positive Message ( Lord of the Rainbow )" offers an interpretation of light transforming into a spectrum, as it passes through a human filter rather than a prism. Neno created a series of these short videos with spectrums appearing from various parts of his anatomy, such as his middle finger, and genitals, for instance. Each of these scenarios represent a different aspect of the artists symbolic understanding of each spectral hue. Neno Belchev was born in 1971 in Varna, Bulgaria. Lives and works in Varna. He graduated in Mural Painting from the National Academy of Art in Sofia, Bulgaria. Works in the fields of video art, performance, installation, sculpture, new media as well as independent curator. CAUTION!!! Caution! Please, do not do this at your home! Even do not try!! All the footage in thеsе videos is shot as a result of long years of practicing Kung Fu, transcendental meditation and happy coincidence. The main characters in thе video are the famous icons of communism: SICKLE AND HAMMER. The action is a visualization of Bulgarian proverb: TO HIT / TO DASH / TO HUSTLE / TO BEAT / TO KNOCK SOMETHING IN YOUR HEAD! TO BEFFET IT IN YOUR HEAD!! – Which means somebody made enormous efforts to have or to achieve something that he/she don’t need after that (if I explain it correctly). This video is a part of Neno’s series of videos "POST-СОЦ-GODS", where he deals with the religious and sacred function of gods and replaces them with icons of the post-socialistic time as Lenin, Stalin, Mao and so on, by putting himself on the place of them. For him making such a parallel is important for the understanding what drive made so many people follow them in the failure implementation of this utopia...

      • IMMIGRATION IN SUITCASE / 2007-2008

video performance: PAL colour screening (720/576 pixels), sound / dimensions: variable / duration: 30 minutes up to hour (with the courtesy of Airida Rekštytė for the photos and for the car. Watch videodocumentation: below! soon!) description: Directly on the street or in the space of the gallery, a very small and old red car is with open luggage-carrier, in which is visible a suitcase. In the suitcase there is an alive man in embryonic position, who is the author of the project – Neno. Inside the suitcase is based video-camera, which broadcasts TV signal with the support of a transmitter. The image of the sweating and suffering man in very uncomfortable position of the body in very tight space is received by the multimedia projector (beamer) and it is projected on a wall of the gallery or on the gallery's window, which looks to the street. conception: For different reasons, outcast from their native born places, many people undertake dangerous journeys with the purpose to find better place for living. Many of them die during the way, traveling in suitcases, luggage-carriers and containers. Neno makes this performance as a research, to understand: what is it, which force so many people to immigrate in other country. What is the value of the emigration? And what is the value of the "better" life? Based on the idea that we unconsciously feel empathy with the characters in movie or in the picture, we watch; or in the book, we read, this performance is a result of the author's desire to identify him with the immigrants and to drive the spectators to put themselves in the place of the immigrants and to feel their suffering. Not the governments, which accept them, but rather the governments, which force them go abroad, have to think on this problem, because the main reason for immigration is not the availability of good conditions in some countries but the absence of same conditions in some other countries. Neno believes that there are a lot of people, who sympathize and help the immigrants, but he also believes that this is not enough. He feels himself close to this theme, because before years he had a friend, who immigrated in Germany in a suitcase. .................................................

video: AVCHD TV (1920X1080pixels) MOV PAL colour screening, aspect ratio: 16:9, sound screening dimensions: variable duration: 3 minutes and 54 seconds This video is a part of my new series of videos "RAINBOW DOES NOT BELONG TO NOBODY" and it will be visible here, after my next solo-exhibition! Besides that, from the very beginning of the video, we are thrown into post-socialistic reality of nowadays Bulgaria; actually it starts optimistically, showing us group of happily playing children. Later, it gets darker, but only to help the author to make a contrast even contradictory parallel between the art and real life, transforming the social message of the video in to a multi meaning metaphor of crossing the bridge between the imagination and reality. This video discusses the role of the artist in the contemporary society. It does not present the artist as somebody, who walks together, or against the mainstream, but rather as somebody, who walks on his own path. On the other hand, the video aims to remind us, that very often we are observers of unexpected, unforeseen and extraordinary phenomenon, but we are so deep in our thoughts about everyday life, that we miss them. We need to develop specific eyes about extraordinariness. The video also can be regarded as a metaphor, presented the "walk through life" as a walk through seven different colours, which symbolical meanings refer to seven stages of the spiritual development. ven we can see the 'light' in the end of the tunnel.
