On March 17 2012 Jessica and I set out across the country to chase down the colors in our dreams through fields and valleys, around rivers and cities, across mountains and deserts. Over the course of two weeks we covered 5158.3 miles, 17 states, 2 speeding tickets, we drove through a snow storm in the mountains of Wyoming, listened to M83, Appleseed Cast, Feist, Smashing Pumpkins, Tycho, Job for a Cowboy, Colour Revolt and the rest of our iTunes playlist about 20 times, heard Adele on the radio more than we care to remember, ate more gas station food than could ever be healthy, broke into Four Corners National Park and made out at the Four Corners in the pitch black desert night, and learned that the line between man-made and nature is blurrier than we had previously believed. Inspired, in equal measures, by Hurricane Katrina, Buster Keaton, The Wizard of Oz, and a love for books, “Morris Lessmore” is a story of people who devote their lives to books and books who return the favor. The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore is a poignant, humorous allegory about the curative powers of story. Using a variety of techniques (miniatures, computer animation, 2D animation) award winning author/ illustrator William Joyce and Co-director Brandon Oldenburg present a hybrid style of animation that harkens back to silent films and M-G-M Technicolor musicals. “Morris Lessmore” is old fashioned and cutting edge at the same time.
