There's always something new to see in the Lembeh Strait. This time our dive center manager Lauren Siba was looking for the recently discovered and still undescribed bryozoan goby. They had only been seen in Ambon and Alor and as far as we know, nobody had spotted them in Lembeh until now. With a lot of patience, she finally found a few specimens as they are tiny, well-camouflaged and are very skittish. Having located them, she then took along our Photo Pro Sascha Janson to get proof and here is the resulting video - we have them in Lembeh as well!

In this film Katrine Worsaae explains the methods used to describe a new species, from the first fauna test, to the isolation of the new species, to fixing of the slide and dissection with a microtome, to a computer-drawn 3D model. She also talks about the classification of species, pædomorphosis and evolution. This week's Field Revealed comes all the way from from Peru where local intrepid researchers have been carrying out "rapid inventories" with the Field Museum's Environment, Culture, and Conservation (ECCo) teams. Rapid inventories are swift surveys of species diversity in remote areas--information which is then provided to local communities as a tool for them to build conservation and education efforts. During ECCo’s 25th Rapid Inventory, the team of botanists found 7 new plant species to science. This Qualea is one of them, and collecting its flowers was a big challenge. Sit back and enjoy watching the botanists doing their work! In addition to wrapping up their 25th Rapid Inventory (ecco25.fieldmuseum.org/en/), ECCo is staying busy both in Chicago and in the Andes-Amazon region. Find out more about their work here: fieldmuseum.org/explore/conservation Wondering what kind of trees those were on your last walk around Chicago? Or in the Amazon? ECCo's Color guides and other useful i.d. and conservations tools can be found here--give them a try! fieldmuseum.org/explore/department/ecco/tools This episode was brought to us by Federico Pardo (www.tropicomedia.org), who documented the ECCo team's 25th Rapid Inventory.
