Project background: History always repeats itself…history never repeats itself…or history has a spiral nature, so nothing is repeated but life always renews itself with new stories…so everything is brand new and nothing is original. The relationship between “place” and “humans” is challenging one. The relationship between “the city” and “the human being” is much more complex. On the other hand, this relationship reveals a great deal about the “past” and about “life”. The “Nor&Eski” project is based upon this complex relationship. Yet, because it is a reconciliation project, the “past” is not the primary subject. Even though the project comes with many “unheard” stories about past, the main emphasis is always on “life” which is “nor/new” and happening now. We believe that reconciliation requires mutual knowledge and understanding between societies. Therefore it is necessary to shed light on not only what happened in the past, but also on people’s current lives, to show what is happening “there” now. Armenia and Turkey, two neighboring countries have many bitter stories from the past, yet hardly know each others’ present. Aims: This project aims to reflect the changing faces of the old and new experiences in the lives of the cities, characterized by the lives of the newcomers flourishing side by side with old stories, old neighborhoods and neighbors within a city that is supposed to remain stagnant as it was in the “good old days”. The project will create knowledge and understanding about “old&new” Bythinia (North Western Turkey), which has witnessed significant historical events, through producing stories as dynamic narratives deriving both from the past, as well as the present and the future. People will get a sense of what a city from Turkey or a city from Armenia looks like today. They will glimpse at what is happening “there” at the moment through a short visual experience. Main activities: Field trips in Bursa and surrounding villages to conduct video interviews with local people. Expected results: The final output of the Project will be a short documentary film, including footage recorded in Bithynian villages, the city center of Bursa, and also Nor Butaniya (New Bithynia) in Armenia. Project coordinators: İsmail Keskin Project team: Gozde Burcu Ege, İbrahim Tevfik, E. Elif Ege, Cansu Günay, Nora Tataryan
