Denver Digerati launched our 2015 Friday Flash series on Friday June 19th with FF No.9 - MTVTM or "Music to Video to Music," guest curated by Milton Melvin Croissant III. The program was shown on our signature LED Screen located at the corner of 14th and Champa in downtown Denver, Colorado. The idea behind Friday Flash No.9 had been on the plate for a long time, some of the most exciting work in motion-based art continually found in the merger of visual art and sound. Handing over the curatorial reigns for such a program, however, was like asking a child to give up their seat at the next Star Wars installment. But it was upon previewing Denver Digerati commissioned artist and frequent collaborator Milton Croissant III’s most recently commissioned music video earlier this year for RUBIK that we decided to hand over that honor, Croissant’s rapidly evolving career, knowledge in the field and network of artists proving to be the perfect combination for what could be a substantial and unique program. Croissant himself is currently riding a wave of advanced interest for his artistic output that most young artists rarely get to experience. 2014 saw Croissant’s inclusion in the Colorado Photographic Art Center’s most revolutionary exhibition to date, “Constructing Images - Post Photography,” as well as the Arvada Center’s ambitious “Unbound - Digital Creations” summer group exhibition. Momentum has certainly not abated for Croissant in 2015 as his work advances towards a more global audience through his inclusion in last month’s Vienna Shorts Festival in Austria as well as the follow up edition of MonkeyTown 5 which recently took place in Barcelona, Spain. But Denver also has a new dose of Croissant’s visual output in the form of his latest 2d prints which were on view at the McNichols Civic Center in the spring exhibition “Press Play.” All of this more than validates his selection in 2011 as one of the top 12 artists under 35 by the Denver Post, and why Denver Digerati values Croissant as an ongoing and important collaborator on all levels. Croissant crafted a very intriguing and broad-based program called MTVTM, or Music to Video to Music for Friday Flash No.9. The program explores today’s evolving world of music videos where the sound/music element is inseparable and features some of the most exciting up-and-coming visual artists and musicians of today. The selected works that will screen are also largely a showcase for evolving trends in digital art and animation, covering a wide range of styles that embody the visual play that is concurrent with advanced technological tools. Croissant compiled an assortment of engaging videos that include local, national and international artists working with musicians such as Holly Herndon, Dan Deacon, Lightning Bolt and others, and the showcase was even the platform launch for select works. The full lineup for the program consists of: Lale Westvind / Lightning Bolt "Metal East" Max Eilbacher "Child's Drawing of a Zen Walk" Nick Vyssotski / Adventure "Same Nightmare" Colin Ward / Killd By "Like a Pelican" Alan Resnick / Dan Deacon "Learn to Relax" VidKidz "Sensory Garden" Akihiko Taniguchi / Holly Herndon "Chorus" Nicole Ginelli / Brandon H "After Dark" MMCIII / Rubik "Duet" Denver Digerati brings innovative digital animation and motion-based art to the public through a network of LED screens and other platforms, with the support of the Denver Theatre District.
