Janadesh 2007 - For a Fistful of Land (2008) India, October 2nd, 2007: 25000 landless people will walk 375 km on the highway which links Gwalior to New Delhi to press the government to undertake significant land reforms. This march is called Janadesh - "the people's verdict". Behind this decision, there's a non-violent movement called Ekta Parishad. Under the leadership of P.V. Rajagopal, Ekta Parishad's activists have been working for over a decade with the poorest among the poor to get the recognition of their rights to control land, water and forest. What is their method to federate hundred thousands of marginalized people? How do they manage to organize Janadesh, that largest non-violent event in India since its independence in 1947? Will the walkers be able to reach New Delhi? Will the government of India accept their demands? Is Rajagopal the new Gandhi? This is the story of a mass-based organization which is adjusting the Gandhian philosophy to modern India.

Polly Mann, a giant in our time, the co-founder of WAMM (Women Against Military Madness) and a tireless peacemaker, talks about the beginning days of WAMM and what's happening today. Polly has inspired and enthused hundreds, perhaps thousands. She sat for a long interview with me and I was able to find a number of relevant clips. She co-founded and named WAMM. She's devoted much of her life to peace and to shining a spotlight on the military madness of our country. The cost in dollars and morals, the horror of mass killing of men, women and children; all to fatten the coffers of a handful of greedy traitors. She appeared on the Phil Donahue show, she turned down Oprah (the subject was going to be Communist Housewives), she ran for Senate, she was arrested for her courage. She said that later she wished they had gone on the Oprah show to laugh at their silliness. She reads and writes without ceasing. A southern lady from Arkansas adopted Minnesota as her home and pulpit. She speaks with passion and enthusiasm, never a malevolent word. Hers is a wonderful story of peace and joy.

Some of history’s greatest leaders became symbols of peace when they rejected the battleground for the negotiating table, and in the process, change the world. The International Day of Non-Violence celebrates the idea that peace, reconciliation and mutual understanding are stronger forces against oppression and injustice than violence or aggression.
