Sanjukta was 15 when her parents left the U.S. and moved back to their small village in Bangladesh. While she was surrounded by family, now living with her Uncle, she felt “really empty”. When she joined Big Brothers Big Sisters, Jola, her big described her as “really shy”. Jola, who was a part of the Workplace Mentoring Program at Metlife, taught Sanjukta valuable workplace skills, and more importantly, self-esteem. “Yola was the one, she brought out that hope in myself” Sanjukta says, of her Big Sister. A year later Jola got her dream assignment, a job in Hong Kong. She was determined to still be there for Sanjukta even if it meant waking up at 4am for calls back to the states. “Hong Kong was 12 hours ahead, we would talk about what she was going through, we would work on her essays ” Jola recalls. Through BBBS of NYC, Jola and Sanjukta learned about a wonderful scholarship opportunity, that Sanjukta applied for and won. Now she is a student at Northeastern University. “If she wasn’t here, I wouldn’t be here” she says, eyes moving around her dorm room. “Nobody can be better than her, nobody ”
