An exploration of landscape and motion through 16mm black-and-white film and rotoscope animation. All animation was done by hand on 4x6 notecards using Sharpies. I made this film as a senior in Bard College's Film and Electronic Arts department. Through it, I hoped to pay tribute to what I found inspiring as a student there- namely, the landscape of the Hudson Valley and the traditions of American avant garde and experimental film. Influences include the landscape films of my advisor, Peter Hutton; the experimental animation and rotoscope works of American avant garde painter and filmmaker Robert Breer; and the earliest works of film by the Lumiéres and others. "Through rotoscoping, I found a way to add a personal touch to my film and to forge a profound connection, one frame at a time, to the footage I had shot... In my work, the Celestial Railroad is film itself, and animation is my attempt to travel by foot, as it were, to that Celestial City of Artistic Endeavor and Personal Expression or, at the very least, to understand what I find valuable and beautiful in my footage and to create something subjective out of what is an essentially objective medium." -from my artist's statement

Her process in working with this beautiful machine is mesmerizing. Watching her mix the ink, set the plates, and fire up the press is so immersive and gives you an appreciation for handmade products. Listening to the sounds of the Heidelberg in action is mesmerizing, the machine almost makes music as the paper goes through the printing process.
