We took the opportunity to show a new service that Oberlin is offering, switchboard.oberlin.edu and what better way to do that than a video of how the service can work for you? We talked to a bunch of first year students and had them write on a shirt, "what they can teach?" We divided these into categories, highlighting things that they could potentially offer on switchboard. The incredibly talented, Kirk Pearson did the music/sound design and Jeff Hagan did the voiceover.

"Say hello to the world for us" offers a compassionate and refreshingly unique look at the West Bank through the eyes and music of two young, maybe slightly naive, but intensely passionate violinists. It follows their travels from Amman to Bethlehem and back, as they perform and give workshops to eager children along the way. As the trip unfolds, they reach a new understanding about what it means to be Classical musicians and human beings. Lauren and Holly both study the violin under professor Milan Vitek at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Lauren was born and raised in Amman, Jordan, and is fluent in Arabic. Holly was born in Fairbanks, Alaska, but spent most of her childhood in Missouri. A little distraction from the real world to help put things in their proper perspective. I created this work for the sheer fun of it, using the unique and wonderful Russell Oberlin as narrator; my recording of Schubert’s DIE FORELLE with vocalists Shirley Perkins, soprano, Nicole Hyde, alto, Alex Guerrero, tenor, and Peter Ludwig, bass, and Richard Duncan conducting and accompanying; plus odds and ends of rough videos and stills left over from BLACK ON BLACK /13. Russell Oberlin, whose career as the world’s leading counter-tenor is legendary, went on to glory as principal in FACADE and then in the part of the Narrator in the Lark Ascending production of THE GREAT DEBATE IN HELL (Books I and II of PARADISE LOST) and as the reader in the Lark Ascending production of WHEN LILACS LAST IN THE DOORYARD BLOOM’D. The recording of Schubert’s DIE FORELLE grew out of SCHUBERT MAL VIER, yet another Lark Ascending production. It was my idea to score Schubert’s lieder for vocal quartet, taking my cue from Schubert himself, who re-arranged DIE FORELLE (“The Trout”) for piano quintet and another lied, DER TOD UND DAS MÄDCHEN (“Death and the Maiden”), for string quartet. It needed only the multi-talented Richard Duncan to do the arranging. SCHUBERT MAL VIER was presented at the Austrian Cultural Forum and the German Consulate in the spring of 2006 to overflowing houses.

In the Spring of 2004, six high school sophomores gave each other silly code names and embarked upon an unlikely quest: to condense the beautiful and epic work of Gabriel García Márquez into a fifteen minute long film. Despite having no script, money, or professional techniques, the film, spelling errors and horrible sound quality in all, would forever define their lives. Their story deserves to be told. Cast, in order of appearance: Ian Cowley Leo Evans Mike Frye Jake Mercer Eddie Miller Jeff Dobbins

Created by The Ants, a three person collaboration of Oberlin College students, this film came from the inspiration of what is possible in a chroma-keyed morph-suit. Only in the final hours of editing was its title "Cordyceps" revealed to its creators, who had been unknowingly spreading the fungus' spores all along.
