Today, these trends have reached their extreme - but in the wake of their collapse, we may find great opportunity to transition to a more connected, ecological, and sustainable way of being. After attending a few GA's, I fell in love with the concrete possibilities of consensus-based participatory democracy, and with the tools of the movement such as audience feedback cues, orderly discussions, and of course the human mic. It wasn't long after being exposed to the last tool that I realized it would be a beautiful way to propose to Deb (good mic checks read like poetry on the page). So I went to a flea market to up-cycle a ring from a local merchant, wrote out some words, and emailed some friends a time & place to meet. I told her we were gonna hang out and play music. Here's what happened instead.

The Queen Mother Dr. Delois N. Blakely, is a community activist and ambassador for peace. She has served as Harlem's unofficial mayor for the last eight years. This past fall she called on Occupy Wall Street supporters to help her "occupy" the boiler room in her building at 477 W. 42nd Street in Harlem's Sugarhill neighborhood, till it was fixed by the building's superintendent. Real estate interests driving gentrification in the neighborhood, impeded attempts to fix the heater with the goal of making the building unlivable. The Queen Mother has called on support to #Occupy 477 an attempt to bring awareness to her efforts to keep the building from being sold to the highest bidder. This video is a prayer from the Queen Mother, a call out to fight back against the gentrification of one of the New York City's poorest and working-class communities. Her struggle is currently in the courts and her voice and spirit is with the people. The evening after the police raid I went to OWS after my subway gig. It was cold and rainy but spirits were strong. The park was barricaded and had only one entrance heavily guarded. They weren't allowing anyone in with items thought to be used for camping etc. Since I had my subway gig stuff, they wouldn't let me in. I went home to drop off my stuff and returned to join the supporters. I got up and sang Amazing Grace. It was truly an uplifting experience. Thanks to Alixanne Goodman who gladly took my camera to film me. I later heard from her that she witnessed some pretty tough police action. "I have bruises and cuts from the riot cops when I had indeed put my hands up, did exactly what they told me to do, and moved back.....A man next to us was writing down badge numbers of cops who were being too physical with the protesters and he got dragged off the sidewalk and arrested. Well his cardboard he was writing badge numbers on fell to the ground and my fiance went to pick it up... well the cops saw and dragged him off the sidewalk and arrested him... It's a scary world we live in when you're getting picked off the sidewalk for nothing... " What Inspires Alixanne? The people of OWS. What Inspires me? Alixanne and her fiance ready to stand up and peacefully protest even in the midst of riot police and threat of arrest.
