                • Brodys 1st ever game goal 9-3-13 tied up 2-2 won 4-3

Brody, 12, always plays defense, both by preference and design as that is a position he is better geared towards. He just isn't aggressive enough for an offensive position for one thing. He has played offense briefly by new coaches trying him out there or if someone got hurt or needed a break, but generally he spends 99% of his game time on defense. And this is like his 6th out of 8 years (possible) playing soccer. This game & goal requires a background story. Brody broke his glasses like Thurs. & as we are overdue, his glasses were out of warranty so couldn't be fixed or quickly replaced. The soonest they could work us in was Labor Day, Monday 9/2/13. We arrived and before we could be seen, the appointment had to be canceled due to the doctor's family emergency. So it was rescheduled for Tuesday afternoon at 4pm. Turns out that our first game of the season was at 7:30 that night. Doc needed to dilate his eyes, which would affect his vision for hours & he might not be able to play comfortably vision wise. He said we could do the main eye exam for the Rx & come back another time for the dilation part (general eye health), but as Brody was already pretty blind without his glasses & the only backup spare was his brother's old Rx glasses which were far too weak for him, I wanted to get it all done then. While I was paying for the glasses, the doc finished up the dilation part of the exam & when I rejoined them, he said Brody couldn't see well enough to play & he felt bad, so he was giving him a free pair of 2 week Rx contacts to wear so he could play that night. At dinner, Brody (a perfectionist prone to anxiety) didn't even want to GO to the game because he said he could see far, but not close with the contacts in (& his eyes dilated). I assured him he'd be able to see something as big as a soccer ball even when it got close. His father even said this would probably be his best game yet. And it was! We have extra players so at least 1-2 sit out at all time. Brody had been sitting out in this first part of the game after playing defensively (and better than usual at that) for a few minutes earlier, but one of our better offensive players got a minor injury and was pulled out, and Brody put in his place - on offense. Brody isn't aggressive, hence our comments. (And yes, a certain someone in video sounds like an idiot - as usual). Well, he was hesitant, he let the girl offensive player take the ball down the field and Brody got into scoring position. And scored. This tied us up 2-2. 2 short plays later, Brody took the indirect kick but it was blocked. We ended up winning 4-3 and while Brody scored the 2nd goal and didn't have the "game winning goal," had he not scored, we would have tied 3-3. This is the video of me, his mom, cheering him on and filming his one and only, thus far, soccer goals. :D Whether it was the better ability to see (despite his fears & the circumstances - dilated eyes, a new Rx, and first ever attempt to wear contacts) & not having to deal with sweat, fog, dew or glares on his glasses, or just that we psyched him up about this going to be his best game ever, or it was all Brody & he finally found the right level of aggressiveness or what, we don't know, but we are thinking we need to have him wear contacts on game days from now on. He doesn't like them so we are hoping to talk him into it. Next game is Saturday, so we will see. Final Note: We don't have our uniforms yet. I think we are going to be like our 4th or 5th year (of 6) of neon green, but we were told to wear blue. So in this still shot, Brody is the one (sans glasses) in blue next to the #3 girl on his team. (First time playing co-ed and half the team are girls & they are pretty good!).
