This is the third film of my Masters degree. this time around the rules were that the entire film had to be shot in one, continuous take - with no edits or cuts in between. here is a link to my reflections on the film http://sastimasti.wordpress.com/2010/03/17/pakistani-sex-scene/

one take impromptu film made in Tokyo by Dennis Wheatley sitting in this sushi bar pondering how best to set up a camera to film things all by itself whilst in Tokyo. Take hands out of the equation... let the camera have its own journey. I'd taken a cannibalised record turntable with me from the UK with the idea of filming slow panoramas but it was painfully bumpy and stopped every minute. Then the eureka moment sitting looking at the carousel A few years later I was working on a piece of music and married the two together. The music is all about that feeling when you're half asleep in the sun.. the ambiance of foreign voices becomes a lullaby to dream away. There's something beautiful in not understanding a language.. it becomes abstract, musical. Opera can be amazing when you can't understand the words! What we loved about watching this film back was the space that the camera was able to enter.. extremely personal and scrutinising but not too lingering. dennis The music is 'lost in a moment' by 'shrift' from the album of the same name. myspace.com/shriftspace more trivia: film was originally taken in 1998... married with the music much later. Thanks for all the positive comments.. will upload a better quality version soon.

It was recently revealed that Alfonso Cuaron's upcoming film, "Gravity", will not only have a 17+ minute opening long take, but also an ASL (average shot length) of 45 seconds. Having been a fan of his previous films, I revisited my favorite one to see just what that type of shot looked and felt like. I had seen the film a few times before, and couldn't recall more than handful of shots that I thought would work. I was shocked to find there were 16 of them -- heck, there are 6 longer than 90 seconds! They are used in a variety of situations, and to great effect. It was easy to see how I could forget there were so many, as each one simply pulled you further into the story. It made me so excited for 'Gravity' that I felt I just had to share with anyone else who would be interested. Some other stats: 62 shots > 22 seconds ("half of 45", my original criteria) 39 shots > 30 seconds 24 shots > 40 seconds 16 shots > 45 seconds 6 shots > 90 seconds Obviously, you should see the film if you haven't already. My point in doing this is to demonstrate the effect of a long take in a variety of narrative uses, and to give an idea of what a 45+ second shot looks and feels like when directed by Alfonso Cuaron. I hope you enjoy! www.refocusedmedia.com twitter.com/refocusedmedia facebook.com/refocusedmedia

Last winter we went to THAILAND for some filming for two months. Jeremia Hoppe, the youngest brother, had an injured knee so Mattias and Benjamin Hoppe went "solo" on this one. This time we focused more on style instead of the "hectic landing new tricks competition". We wanted to have some rail hits in this video but the obstacle we were working on for 5 month didn't finish IN TIME.. We do love rails! Tags
