'Ways of Something' is a contemporary remake of John Berger’s BBC documentary, 'Ways of Seeing' (1972). The thirty-minute video consists of one-minute videos by thirty webbased artists who commonly work with 3D rendering, GIFs, film remix, webcam performances, and websites to describe the cacophonous conditions of artmaking after the internet. Compiled by Lorna Mills, this remake is based off the first episode of a four-part series of thirtyminute films created by art theorist John Berger and produced by Mike Dibb. In the original film, voice-of-God narration over iconic European paintings offer a careful dissection of traditional ‘fine art’ media and the way society has come to understand them as art. This video invites artists to respond to what Berger calls ‘learned assumptions’ about art in dialogue with the camera and the screen in its reproduction. It is, in effect, art about art about television about the internet. Featuring formal, figural and kitsch practices to videomaking, Ways of Something is constituted by aesthetically diverse interpretations of Berger’s ideas on looking at art after the introduction of digital media. Ultimately, it will turn the highbrow nature of documentary film into a wondrous and disjointed series of alternative outlooks on how artists understand art today. The filmmakers were: Tony Neu, Volodymyr Amiot, Chad Connery, Brent Bell, Igor Cabrilo, Jonathan Granke, Lori Fossum, Joshua Adria, Paul Dolick, Nadine Burner, Mallory Briggs, Choi Yuen Ho, Rebecca Wong, Bree Bergen, Marianette Aguirre, Mathew Trendota, Stefani Bejatovic, Catherine Frederick, Tiffany Leong, Chelsea Grant, Andrew Boongum, Kyle Janzen, John Dantzer, Kelsey Hallson, KC McCormick. This is simply a showreel of the 26 videos produced in the seminar; they can also be found at: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL54A1BE83303029EC&feature=plcp and 24 of them can be found at: http://www.cityoneminutes.org/ with full credit to the creators: one minute films documenting every hour of the day (actually, quite a lot of different days) from midnight to midnight. Jaimz Asmundson, Skot Deeming + Rick Fisher provided crucial support for this project.
