This is a prototype created by Luke Hespanhol as part of the Device Lab at the Master of Interaction Design and Electronic Arts, University of Sydney. It consists in a mood lamp ultimately driven by sensors attached to the user's body. The vital signs collected determined the color of the light emitted as well as the pitch and frequency of the sound played by the lamp. The prototype consists of 4 parts: (1) A heart rate chest band sensor worn by the user. (2) A standalone electronic glove (powered by a 9V battery) reading the user's galvanic skin response (GSR) and transmitting it to the lamp through low-frequency radio waves. (3) A console containing Polar heart rate sensor interface board (designed by Dan Julio Design's and Sparkfun) and an Arduino. The unit collects the heartbeat info from the chest band and sends it via USB to a Processing application running in a laptop, which enables data visualisation. It also sends the info back (also via USB) to the Arduino within the unit, which forward it to an Xbee transmitter and then, wirelessly, to a receiver at the top of the lamp. (4) The lamp itself, with an Arduino and an Xbee receiver running at its top and controlling an LED cluster and as well as a speaker. The lamp is also standalone and powered by a 9V battery. The main goal of this project was to play with the possibilities of using technology to augment the physical environment in reaction to people physiological and emotional states. A dialogue is therefore put in motion, with people influencing their surroundings and, through their active response, being also fed back with further stimuli, in an continuous interactive loop.

A final human sound jam before the project left South Africa. The jam was organised in collaboration with Cape Town Open Design Festival as a part of their festival wrap party..This was an incredible opportunity provided by Open Design Festival, to run an open song making experience in City Hall of all places. Only 20 years ago this auditorium was off bounds to 75% of the population but on this day people, young and old, black and white, of different cultures and socio-economic backgrounds from all around Cape Town, gathered in the magnificent auditorium to make a song together. The song made was a celebration of diversity and collaboration. It was a beautiful way to end the project’s time in South Africa (for now).
