Methadone, a member of the opioid family, is increasingly being prescribed to pain sufferers not only because it is less expensive than Oxycontin or Vicodin, but because it stays in the body longer—a factor that has contributed to the number of accidental overdose deaths in pain patients in Washington state. At the same time, methadone’s half-life has allowed thousands of opiate addicts in our state to recover from and/or manage their addiction through careful administration of the drug at treatment centers. We sit down with Ron Jackson, Executive Director of Evergreen Treatment Services, to learn why methadone works for treating opiate addiction and explore the increased need for this type of treatment. This video was produced to accompany the KCTS 9 Television documentary, Prescription for Abuse which originally aired on January 30, 2012. Access to basic pain-killing medications is something that many countries and communities take for granted. However, because of antiquated Soviet-era laws and fears of drug trafficking, Armenians lack access to one of the most effective forms of pain relief, oral opioids. According to Armenian law, only cancer patients can receive opioids, effectively leaving thousands of other patients to suffer needlessly. Although oral morphine is generally used in hospitals around the world, the government fears that legalization of opioids will lead to black market distribution and addiction. This video was made as part of a campaign advocating for greater accessibility to palliative care. English Version: https://vimeo.com/50197680
