Alma is an ensemble of easy to play musical instruments, a piece of music, a group music project and a way for people of all ages and musical abilities to work together to create something they couldn't do alone. I have been developing instruments and techniques since early 2012 for this project, which will see its first public outing at the Dublin Mini Maker Faire in the grounds of Trinity College and Science Gallery on Saturday 14th July, from 10-5pm. For the Maker Faire I will demonstrate how to make some simple instruments such as drums and whistles, which will be played in addition to the permanent instruments by the audience at the end of the day. It is my intention to build on this project over the coming months, adding new instrument types, music games, visual scores and giving workshops in instrument building and group music making. With ALMA I wish to involve people who may not have played music before, by making the instruments numerous (strength in numbers!) and accessible enough (single pitch instruments, played by either blowing into a tube or hitting with a stick) for anyone to play. ALMA uses a five note Pentatonic scale and colour coded instruments. So far these instruments consist of tube chimes, reed pipes, wood blocks, single note whistles and percussion instruments. Slide whistles and various types of string instruments are in development.

A special performance by Orchestra Mozart Sinfonietta. Passio Domini Nostri Jesu Christi secundum Ioannem, Oratory by Alessandro Scarlatti (Revised by the Conductor Stefano Sabene). The orchestra Mozart Sinfonietta was formed in April 2004 in Rome, at the instignation of Stefano Sabene, who is its president and musical director, and of Massimo Fargnoli, who was already the artistic director of the Orchestra "Alessandro Scarlatti" R.A.I of Neaple and of the Orchestra Sinfonica R.A.I of Rome. The first artist's selection availed herself of a judging commission persisting of the unforgettable Franco Mannino and of Luìs Bacalov, Marcello Panni, Bruno Aprea, Georg Moench and Angelo Persichilli. The orchestra has worked with directors like Alberto Zedda, Donato Renzetti, Luìs Bacalov, Marcello Panni, Pietro Rizzo, Angelo Pagliuca, Cinzia Pennesi, with the participation of solists among whom Domenico Nordio, Roberto Prosseda, Alessandro Carbonare, Luìs Quintero, Carlo Bruno, Chiara Giordano, Raul Jimenez, Laura Cherici, Jolanda Auyanet, performing at festivals of international importance, like: Ravello Festival, Todi Arte Festival, Mozartbox – Portici, Galleria Colonna – Roma, Civita Festival, Giugno Barocco – Napoli, Festival Barocco di Viterbo, Festival Chitarristico – Ischia… Among other things the orchestra had the honor to be the very first to perform the following works: “Orchestre Mozartiane” di Sylvano Bussotti (Dir. Stefano Sabene); “Le Madri” di Marcello Panni (Dir. Marcello Panni); “Monsier Bacchus” di Luìs Bacalov (Dir. Stefano Sabene). In addition the orchestra collaborates with concerting institutions, theaters, directors of orchestra and festivals with the objective of developing specific musical programs, and also disposes of a philological body for the production of baroque music.

A small acoustic zither made from white oak, lime wood and birch ply. Nine strings and a sweet tone, this instrument can be played with fingers, picks, or as I demonstrate in the video, by doubling the amount of notes with a third bridge and hitting the strings with sticks (I used a small ball peen hammer and chopsticks as they were at hand, but anything that size would do). Of course other playing methods could be invented... I'm selling these instruments at a fair price so if you're interested in getting something unique looking and sounding get in touch by emailing me at edjdevane /at\ gmail /dot\ com
