Brief remarks on the use of technology to fight fires. The Orland Fire Protection District OFPD used a video drone to inspect the roof of a home that was engulfed in fire early Wednesday morning on July 29, 2015 at 2:46 am. The drone assists FireFighters in pinpointing fires, the condition of structures that have high elevations. This home was two stories in the front yard and three stories in the backyard. It allows the firefighters to direct resources like water hoses, and also monitor firefighters as they battle the fires. The video was taken at a media availability at the site of the fire at the 108th block of Scarlet Drive in Orland Park. Speaking on the video are OFPD Battallion Chief Mike Schofield, OFPD Battalion Chief William Bonner Jr., and OFPD Drone operator Bill Neumann. The drone costs approximately $1,200, plus some minor additional costs for an iPad, extra batteries, etc. It is GPS synced so that it can land from the precise location where it is airlifts. The drone includes a video monitoring capability so firefighters can control and view the video images from the drone of the property that is on fire. Here's the release: No injuries at Orland Home seriously damaged by fire Lightning suspected, officials said. The family was on vacation The Orland Fire Protection District responded to a fire reported in a home located on the 108th block of West Scarlet Drive in Orland Park early Wednesday morning. The fire was reported at about 2:46 am on Wednesday July 29, 2015 and initial arriving fire companies found heavy fire had spread through the attic and roof areas of the 5,000 square foot residential home. Firefighters reported that heat radiating from the blaze was extensive. OFPD Chief Ken Brucki said that firefighters immediately went into a defensive position to get the fire under control preventing any injuries. “This fire had a tremendous amount of heat and it concerned us,” Brucki said. “We were concerned about structures around the property and took appropriate precautions to keep nearby properties safe.” Brucki said the cause of the fire is under investigation. “Crews were able to conduct a rapid primary search to confirm there were no occupants in the property at the time, and we were able to verify that the family was vacationing,” Brucki said. The alarm was elevated to a full still to bring in additional companies. A total of two aerial master streams and five large diameter hand-lines were required to extinguish the fire. The structure suffered major fire damage to the entire roof and extensive damage to the interior of the structure from fire, smoke, and water. It took approximately an hour to bring the fire under control. Brucki said one possible cause of the fire may be lightning noting “there was a tremendous amount of lightning in the area at approximately the same time of the fire.” Brucki also said that the fire department was able to deploy a drone to assist in quickly identifying the fire location on the home. “It was a very large home and the drone helped give us an immediate, aerial view of the property and the fire,” Brucki said. “The aerial view assisted the Battalion Chief to direct suppression efforts to bring the fire under control. end

Girls’ Night In is one of our annual Signature Events at The Bridge. This night is is designed for girls, focusing on inner and outer beauty through a variety of stations. This year, our theme was "Let Love Grow" where students experienced a night that was so uplifting, encouraging, and meaningful so that they may see that they have purpose, they are beautiful, and they are loved. As soon as students started walking in, they were encouraged to take a photo at our "Love Your Selfie Photo booth" where they held up chalkboards that represented what they love about themselves. During the night, we had five different stations for students to participate in. The first was called "Love Your Reflection" where students were taught by Alison Andrews Day Spa and Salon Evangelos (our event sponsors) how to love themselves on the outside. The second station was called "Love Your Body". Students learned about how to love your body by only eating things that are good for you. Students got to sample tea and pastries from Legendary Baking. The third station was where students met Lexi Elisha Official (our performer for the night). She talked to them about important issues and encouraged them to be confident in who they are. The fourth station was called "Love others" where students made good deed bracelets. When they do a good deed, they get to move a bead over on their bracelet. Their challenge was to do 10 good deeds a week! The fifth station was called "Love Letters". Students were challenged to write a love letter to themselves to tell them what they loved about themselves and how proud they are of themselves. Then they sealed their letters and put them in the love letter mail box until they read them again next year. Students then finished out the night with a live performance from Lexi Elisha! Thank you so much to everyone who made this night possible! Everyone had such a great time because of your help! Song - "Who Says" by Selena Gomez
