Redfin minnows (genus Pseudobarbus) are a unique and threatened group of freshwater fish found in the Cape Floristic Region (CFR) at the south-western tip of Africa. As the name implies, their fins glow bright red, particularly at breeding time, and males develop strange white conical growths on their noses (called tubercles) to help attract a mate. Incredibly, these fish also produce clicking sounds that echo through their silent watery worlds, presumably to warn other fish to keep clear of their territories. Redfin sound production - http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.2989/AJAS.2008.33.3.14.626 In the CFR alone, there are at least 12 species of redfin (all endemics), of which nine face a serious threat of extinction in the near future. Predatory fish, such as trout and bass, have been introduced to most rivers in South Africa, and have eaten their way through nearly all of our indigenous fish populations in a mere 100 years. These introduced species now pose arguably the single greatest threat to our remaining freshwater fish populations. Jeremy Shelton (based at the University of Cape Town) is passionate about conserving freshwater fish and ecosystems in South Africa. He recently completed his PhD focussing on the impact of rainbow trout on stream communities in the CFR and is now determined to increase awareness about the dire state of South Africa’s river systems. He believes that cleverly-directed, small-scale conservation efforts can go a long way towards improving the perilous state of the indigenous freshwater fishes of the CFR. “There is an urgent need to improve awareness and education about our freshwater fishes if we are to convince funders and managers that these fishes desperately need our help” says Jeremy. Indeed, a recent project conducted in a river flowing through the Cedarberg Mountains has demonstrated that realistic, achievable management interventions can be extremely effective in reeling our threatened fish species back from the edge of extinction. It was Friday the 24th of May and the fog on the Atlantic seaboard was heavy. Steve predicted it would roll into the city and into Camp's Bay, so we headed up the mountain to search for a fresh perspective of our beautiful city. True enough, as the sun set and the land cooled, the fog rolled in boisterously under the full moon and the city disappeared.
