A project for Bulwark FR. Because People Aren't Fireproof. Over an 8-month period, I created this large 3-dimensional paper sculpture and, in the end, it was burned down. You breathe so much life into this thing and to see it go so quickly, it's actually quite frightening. It just shows you how precious life is and how in the blink of an eye, in an instant, you can lose everything.

www.worldpaperflowers.com When you first see Arnold World’s flower sculptures, you wouldn’t think they are made of napkins. The intricately coiled stems and symmetrical petals appear to be folded together with wire and glue. But Mr. World will tell you it is much more simple. “We don’t fold, we roll,” he says. He creates his artwork not in an art studio, but at a coffee table in Powell’s City of Books. He is there everyday rolling, creating and growing the energy he hopes to leave behind. The process to create a tatebanko, Approximately 300 of them will be made and shown in What: Eccentric City: Rise and Fall Who: Keiichi Tanaami and Phunk Studio When: Thu 19 Aug, 6.30pm - 8pm Where: Block F Level 2 #F201, LASALLE Admission: Free, on a first-come, first-served basis Eccentric City: Rise and Fall, presents an exhibition based upon the beliefs and disillusionment of the Japanese artist, Keiichi Tanaami, Eccentric City: Rise and Fall is a collaboration with the Singaporean art and design collective, :phunk. The exhibition involved a selected group of students in an apprenticeship programme under :phunk, known as TRANSMISSION:LAB. The collaboration between Tanaami and :phunk demonstrates an overlapping relation between practices in art and design. This relation is reflected in their background. Tanaami, who was one of the avant-garde members of the countercultural movement in Japan in the Sixties, began his career in advertising design, incorporating polychrome printing into his pop art works. The four individuals in :phunk collective were invited to represent their works in the Gwangju Biennale (2005) and various art fairs, while continuing an ongoing presence in the design world. In Eccentric City: Rise and Fall, Tanaami and :phunk create intensely coloured worlds that constantly collide and clash with each other. This collaboration blurs the gaps between worlds, bringing the past closer to the present and art and design into a tense alignment. (Tatebanko is a forgotten Japanese art of creating amazing dioramas and scenic perspective from paper. tebanko was popular and widely admired from the Edo period ( 17th century ) to the early 20th century. Then it all but disappeared. )
