A critical part of Paris Photo Los Angeles was the educational component, organized by independent curator Douglas Fogle, and titled Sound and Vision. This program offered our visitors multiple intellectual perspectives on the use of images – both moving and still – in contemporary culture. Bringing together two artists at a time in the Sherry Lansing Theater on the Paramount Studios lot, the Conversations could open a free wheeling discussion of the practice of image making whether it be in the realm of the expanded uses of the photographic image or in the world of film and video. Each conversation was introduced by an international curator or critic who opened the talk with a conceptual meditation on the relationship between still and moving images in the history of art and cinema.

Boris Mikhailov, was born in Kharkov, Ukraine (former USSR) in 1938, and lives and works in Kharkov and Berlin. After graduating, Boris Mikhailov worked as an engineer on a missile construction factory. This "boring and routine» job did not satisfy his "ambitions". He decided to make a film about the history of the factory, formerly a colony for homeless children, who lived and worked there, thus producing the first soviet camera -FED. At the same time, Mikhailov also began taking photographs and devoting much of his free time to photography. The ordinarary citizen and his life was the main subject of his photographs. After difficulties with the KGB and the loss of his job, his photographs became more socially oriented and critiqued the regime. In his main photographic series, Mikhailov addresses social themes, using concrete examples to show the state of society and changes brought on with the dissolution of the USSR. From the end of the 80s he began to exhibit in the West and soon received recognition from the international art community. Mikhailov has been awarded numerous international photography prizes. He has had solo exhibitions at major art institutions in Europe and in the United States. His works are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Tate Modern London; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; the Stedlik Museum Amsterdam; the Berlinische Gallery; the Pinchuk Art Center; the FotoMuseum Wintertur, ...
