On Saturday 13 March 2010, 150 residents of Blaenau Gwent turned out to have their say in Safer Blaenau Gwent‘s ‘Your Voice, Your Choice’ Participatory Budgeting Event. In total £30,000 was available for local people to decide which community safety projects would be funded in their neighbourhoods. The pilot, supported by the Home Office, invited local residents to come up with ‘community safety’ projects of no more than £3,000, with only two criteria: projects must be delivered in Blaenau Gwent and they must address ‘community safety’ issues. Safer Blaenau Gwent worked with the Wales PB Unit, who provided useful advice on important elements of the process, and six pre-events were arranged throughout February to raise awareness of the ‘Your Voice, Your Choice’ event. The response from the residents of Blaenau Gwent was fantastic, with 68 projects submitted, totaling nearly £180,000. A working group, made up of residents, checked the projects to make sure that they would be of benefit to the communities of Blaenau Gwent and that they fulfilled the ‘community safety’ criteria. The group was supported by officers of the Safer Blaenau Gwent Community Safety Team.

A group of young people from the Crew Club recently went to a conference in Portugal about Participatory Budgeting (PB) where they learnt about other PB systems in France and Portugal and democracy in schools. We are seeking funding to further this work; we would like to do an exchange with delegates from a school in Oignie, Lille. Two young people who attended the conference in Portugal will head up a group of 6 people to visit Oignie in August, then in October a group of 6 participants from Lille will visit us. During these visits we will learn about animation and film-making and will use these new skills to create a bi-monthly young persons’ animated newsletter about Whitehawk. This exchange will give us the opportunity to learn new skills, learn about other cultures and practice our language skills. We would share what we have learnt with others at the Crew Club. In January 2014, San José, CA residents had a chance to influence their city’s forthcoming budget by playing games. Representatives from San José Neighborhood Associations and the Neighborhoods Commission and Youth Commission joined 100s of their fellow residents to share their perspectives and opinions regarding budgeting priorities for the City of San José. This year’s event was the fourth annual Budget Games, produced by Conteneo for the City of San José, and included, for the first time, online games to expand game play to 100s more San José residents. (And was supported by Microsoft through it’s donation of 100+ Surface Tablets for the event.)
