Stop #1 of the 2013 Nike SbA Am Series was held at Nerang Skatepark this past Saturday. Despite dripping humidity and fierce temperatures, the turnout and overall standard of the skating in the comp was overwhelming high. From the moment the Juniors started fanging around the joint through to the crew that who ripped during and after the Open Final: there simply wasn’t a dull moment at Nerang. Guest additions to the SbA crew included some talented skateboard units: Pedro Day (MC), Tommy Fynn and Joel Mcilroy (guest judges). continued here: http://sba.org.au/Blog/2013-nike-sba-am-series-queensland-qualifier Video: Shane Fowler

Video by Luke Rigby for sba.org.au Due to freeway upgrades, Ballina’s been getting bypassed quite heavily in recent times. The iconic Big Prawn is dead, well fading in the sun. Heck, even the Macca’s has closed up shop. Ballina is transitioning to a quieter life without the constant passing of trucks and cars. It is with this adjustment that the Ballina Shire Council wanted to step down its involvement in organising the annual Fair Go skateboarding competition, and they subsequently approached Skateboarding Australia (SbA) to run the event. One thing was for sure: Ballina would be anything but bypassed this weekend. The freshly painted skatepark awoke to a tangerine sunrise void of clouds: perfect conditions for a skate-party. With the support of the awesome volunteer team, bump in was made light work… until it was time to sweep the bowl. Turned out some meddling detractor had sprayed the thing with Canola oil, making it ice-like in feel. After moments of panic, we got on the Googler and found a substance that would clean it off. Degreaser is the key if you’re ever faced with this hate-inspired situation. continued at http://skateboardingaustralia.org.au/Blog/fair-go-ballina

Last Saturday the Queensland Nike SbA Qualifier was held at Nerang Skatepark and as with last year’s comp the level of skating was truly through the roof. SbA had assembled a pretty epic cast for this one. Aside from the usual suspects we had Ben Bowring from WA as an event assistant, Nathan Jackson and Joel McIlroy (last year’s winner) as judges and Jesse Noonan as guest MC. Oz Champ Tommy Fynn even rocked up to treat our retinas to some of his high-tech footwork. But, as with any stop on the Am Series it is about the people you haven’t heard of more so than the ones you have. The Nerang Skatepark is one of Australia’s finest multi-terrained parks and it pretty much caters for everyone. Given the street flavour of the Am Series it was triangular-shaped street sector that was the focus of the comp. We set up at dawn-break hoping that the rain would hold out for the day and disobey the weatherman’s prediction. continued here... http://skateboardingaustralia.org.au/Blog/nike-sba-2012-am-series-qld-qualifier

Northern New South Wales was rocked on the weekend of October 8 and 9, 2011. Saturdays Ballina Fair Go was epic; SbA Coaches Pat Gemzik, Max Schubert, and Adam Dawes came first, second, and third in that order. Then Patty and Max joined the rest of the SbA crew as we ventured deep into the rich, luscious Northern New South Wales mountain ranges; a sub-tropical paradise of rich earth, rainforest & newly skate-able heaven. Lizette Twisleton of the Lismore City Council has been the driving force behind the Nimbin Skatepark scene for over 10 years, and wanted to celebrate the very prolonged completion of the final Nimbin Skatepark with a festival-style come and try day. SbA’s Break N Enter is exactly this. Setting up on Sunday morning was blissful as the fog dissipated between the lush hills while the sun rose. Then the community started dripping in and before we knew it we were at capacity. Families and Friends Of Nimbin Skatepark sat on the green hill, listening to dub-reggae amplified straight from Lizette’s phone, watching the heartwarming spectacle of youth (and a few adults) loving skateboarding. We had a bit of a ceremony to acknowledge SbA’s most senior coach Andreas Schwitter for his years of dedication, as well as acknowledging Lizette for her unwavering commitment to the local skate scene. The respect and energy of the Nimbin community is wonderful and somewhat rare, and the whole day flowed with hype, smiles, learning, love & respect. SbA filmer Matt Hooker captured the highlights of what was a magical day where the people gathered and shared a communal energy of pure positive skateboarding. Huge thanks to Lismore City Council for planting the seed.
