    • Gun Control - New River Gorge, WV

      from Pat Goodman Added 456 5 0

This video is an attempt to highlight not only the quality of the climbing at the New, but the style of climbing that this special place offers. Gun Control is probably about 5.13c in comparison to the other routes in the area and in my belief should stand as an example (if given the right features and rock quality), to the budding route developers with their charged up “bolt guns” to investigate the potential for natural protection when equipping a route and have some gun control. Obviously there are some continuity errors when the angles change, but whatever… Big thanks to La Sportiva for the production support. Thanks to Mike Williams for the camera work and a huge thanks to the New River Alliance of climbers for keeping things tight with the Park Service!! Hard, Tall and Proud, Man on he Moon could be the most aesthetic high-ball boulder problem we have in West Virginia; if you have ever been here, then you know there is a plethora of big boulders, so this is a bold statement! Man on the Moon is located at Cotton Top bellow Hawks Nest Dam in the New River Gorge. Nic has suggested a grade of V.10. The New River Alliance of Climbers gets a big pat on the back for working with the private land owners (currently Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners http://www.brookfieldrenewable.com/) BEFORE climbing development started. The result has been a very healthy relationship that has allowed climbers as well as other outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy this spectacular section of the New River Gorge in West Virginia. • Projects: Trad in the New

          from Matt Wilder Added 14.6K 70 5

Climbing projects are an interesting beast. They come into your life and sometimes completely take over. They challenge you to push beyond your current limits. When you succeed it can be extremely rewarding, but success is not always in the cards. Here Matt Wilder and Pat Goodman attempt some gear-protected projects in the New River Gorge. Along the way they experience the euphoria of completing a new line and also the disheartening acceptance of failure.

The long lost legendary "Best roof crack boulder problem at the New" has been justly ignored for decades. With thousands of pitches of world class rock lining the Gorge, carrying a crash pad was folly. Then, the Boonies arrived. Joey Henson's rediscovery of this upside-down 35-foot off-width cricket-infested caveman pain fest meant a call for backup. Gene Kistler and Kenny Parker were too old by then, so the mantle fell to young Patrick Goodman. Then Tim Rose showed up and started climbing on the ceiling just before Lisa Hummel's crimpy stare felled the boulder for good. And there was much rejoicing. Here is the tale.
