In 1969, Fred Rogers was not nationally known when he spoke before the Senate Commerce Committee on behalf of a new national public television system. His address came from his heart and as surprising personal. So much so that his words impacted the gruff chairman, Senator Pastore from Rhode Island.

Please visit the PBS Learning Media library (http://www.pbslearningmedia.org/resource/muen-math-ee-scientific-notation/scientific-notation/) to access the supplementary learning materials included with this video. This video was made for the PBS Learning Media library, thanks to a generous grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. It was produced in collaboration with Utah Education Network. Common Core State Standards: CCSS.Math.Cont.8.EE.A.4 ( Grade 8 ): Perform operations with numbers expressed in scientific notation, including problems where both decimal and scientific notation are used. Use scientific notation and choose units of appropriate size for measurements of very large or very small quantities (e.g., use millimeters per year for seafloor spreading). Interpret scientific notation that has been generated by technology.

This is the 53 minute version of the film that was broadcast on PBS/POV. It is in English (it also contains some Spanish with English subtitles). This TV version, is also available as a bilingual DVD here: http://90miles.org/Get_Video.html Synopsis: In 90 MILES, Cuban-American filmmaker Juan Carlos Zaldivar, recounts the strange twist of fate that propelled his family to risk their lives across one of the world's most treacherous stretches of water. 90 MILES (90 MILLAS) serves as a microcosm to the legacy of the historical conflict between the U.S. and Cuba, but its story echoes wherever there has been conflict around the world. 90 MILES (90 MILLAS) is Zaldivar's quest to piece together the twists--and consequences--of his family's journey into exile. Zaldivar's dramatic shift in ideology (he was once a 13-year-old loyalist of the Cuban Revolution) is traced with surprising balance and poise, allowing the film to withstand the test of time. Above all, the film is a search for understanding and healing between father and son by uncovering the emotional distance opened by the 90 miles of water between Cuba and the U.S. 90 MILES (90 MILLAS) illuminates the psychological ramifications of immigration within our personal identities and in the psyche of Americans.

You can download the demo from: http://www.derkreature.com/the-tank/ I began work on the tank rig in early 2012 as a small side project. I had originally started this work as an experiment to determine whether the simulation would be possible. It has no practical use and was created mainly to provide an interesting test asset for developing my personal rendering framework. The rig uses a modified version of HACD to generate a hierarchy of concave shapes created from 2500 convex shapes. Collisions between driven and non driven actors composed of these concave shapes drive the tread model. The flag uses PhysX cloth and is driven through a static parent transform to the turret actor. The asset is rendered using the physically based shading method proposed by Epic Games during Siggraph 2013: http://blog.selfshadow.com/publications/s2013-shading-course/karis/s2013_pbs_epic_notes_v2.pdf http://blog.selfshadow.com/publications/s2013-shading-course/karis/s2013_pbs_epic_slides.pdf I recently decided to convert the asset's materials to support physically based shading, stabilize the simulation and clean the project up for a public release. I plan to convert the rig to a raycast model later in 2015 to allow for the creation of a more complex and compelling demo.
