Our guest speaker will be Dr. Craig Detweiler who directs the Center for Entertainment, Media and Culture at Pepperdine University. He’s a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Davidson College and earned an M.F.A. from the University of Southern California’s acclaimed film school. Craig completed his MDiv and PhD at Fuller Theological Seminary. His newest book is iGods: How Technology Shapes Our Spiritual and Social Lives. Detweiler also edited the first book on theology and video games, Halos and Avatars: Playing Video Game with God. His previous book, Into the Dark, searches for the sacred amidst the top-ranked films on the Internet Movie Database. — WHY ARE WE DOING THIS SERIES The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?” Matthew 13:10 He encouraged us to have ears to hear and eyes to see! “The pure, raw power of the film to capture a person who watches it, both by its vividness and by the tremendous power of the camera to concentrate and change perspectives, is a sacramental potential that is hard for other art forms to match” –Rob Johnston in God’s Wider Presence Jesus often described what the kingdom of God was like by telling a story. A farmer, a king, a son venturing off to sow his wild oats, the birds of the air. Sometimes his stories were warnings, sometimes they were encouragements but the stories or parables always were employed by our Lord to transmit truth through the effective and emotional medium of story. Today, movies are the primary storytelling medium in our culture. Like all stories, movies tell us about ourselves, reflect our culture and can point us to God’s story, sometimes explicitly, but more often indirectly, sometimes positively, sometimes negatively. Movies can entertain us, but they also stir up emotions within us, initiating conversations which last longer than it takes to digest the popcorn consumed in the theater. Movies shed light on life’s meanings and human relationships as we interact with the themes made visible in film. In short, movies attempt to exegete life and this series will help us build the God-bridges between the movies we see and the God we love and follow. Join us each Sunday as we utilize blockbuster movies as a catalyst to explore biblical themes of faith. In a series full of fun, we’ll discover how the timeless truth of God’s Word can be seen through the lens of today’s modern movies! Is God speaking to you through a song, a show, or a movie you recently listened to or watched? Share your story about how you’re listening to God or He is speaking to you or bringing you closer to Him through the elements that surround us.
