          from Harriet McDougall Added 173 3 1

Mrs. Doreen Ellis has lived on the Downham estate in Catford for 85 years. For her, this is no ordinary suburb, it is the backdrop of her life. These are the building blocks for her memories and relationships; the reference points for her experiences and identity. Can sharing the personal meanings embedded in a place effect a stranger's perceptions of it?

from Darragh Mason Field Added 236 2 0

Every Friday morning after collecting their pension's the bachelor farmers of the area around the small rural town of Foxford come to Guirys pub for a few pints. It is here they meet and chat. Most spend their time alone and isolated on their farms. These are the few hours they mix socially. The 'Bachelor farmer' is a residual effect of the great famine of the 1840's. A victim of social pathologies which affect both their farming and their social and personal life in negative ways. In order to prevent the farm being divided up into smaller holdings, the eldest son inherited everything. Other son's we're prevented from marrying until middle age or older in order for them to work on the farm and it was very common for them not to marry at all. The result is a strata of marginalized men. The faces in this work are from a troubled but in many ways innocent generation. They are faces that are vanishing from Ireland. Music by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis

                from ABC Open Capricornia Added

A 13-year-old boy escorts me through a dark tunnel on the outskirts of Rockhampton. The confined space is littered with scrunched up plastic bags. They have been filled with glue and paint to sniff out of. My young tour guide *Edward doesn’t live on the streets that he walks me through. He sleeps on the couch at his Auntie’s home, where five to six other people crash at any given time. Sometimes more. Edward’s mother abandoned him and his siblings years ago. She lives a few hours out west but he doesn’t really see her that often, if at all. His father died years ago, but he’s not sure how. He doesn’t go to school, and fills the void of his day by roaming the streets and sniffing paint or glue. Whatever is easier to steal at the time. It is estimated that approximately 15 per cent of people in regional Queensland are living in poverty. This means they are living on less that 50 per cent of the Australian median income. Poverty can also be determined by the amount of disposable income someone has after taking out cost of living expenses. Essentials such as housing, food and healthcare become negotiable depending on how much is in the wallet at the time. The statistics are even grimmer if you are from an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander background. Unemployment rates for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders living in Queensland are three to four times higher than the rest of the population, and they are 2.5 times more likely to be in the lowest income bracket. The aim of Anti-Poverty Week is to shed light on these issues, and to encourage research, discussion and action to address these problems. As you’ll see in the video above, poverty is a multi-faceted issue. It encompasses different people from different walks of life, all with different problems. Edward is just one of the thousands of people trying to get through their day living in sub-standard conditions. *Edward is not his real name. http://open.abc.net.au

Kaffeslabberas is a unique group of danish women, most of them past the age of 80. The ladies of Kaffeslabberas are all expert knitters and meet up to celebrate their craftmansship, but also to chat and support each other over countless cups of coffee. These women are living proof that old age can be a time of creativity, inspiration and lust for life. Their age-old knitting traditions have caught the eye of artists and designers, and they have collaborated with famed designer Henrik Vibskov among many others. The Kaffeslabberas project was recently made into a art-book project, in which seven ladies were paired up with seven artist to collaborate creatively, and to connect and share their hugely different life experiences through a conversation session. This film is part of a seven film short-series, accompanying this book. I shot it single-camera, in between interviews and still photography. Project completed while employed by www.bemerk.dk
