For the inaugural show in 303 Gallery's 21st street space in New York City, multimedia artist Doug Aitken presented Migration, the first in a 3-part cycle of installations titled Empire. VernissageTV attended a special viewing of Doug Aitken's installation Migration on October 2, 2008. Aitken invited the musicians Lichens, White Rainbow and ARP to perform live music improvisations to the installation, replacing the film's original soundtrack. This is another segment in our series r3 that highlights the treasures of VernissageTV's huge archive. Imagine a castle, difficult to enter, surrounded by flowing ocean streams. There is a dark wood with no path. The "King with a thousand faces" embarks on a journey led by his jinny, his fair damsel. She is the Sorceress, Undine, Anna Livia Plurabelle. He is Perceval, Dante and Finnegan. The Swinging Door includes texts from: Tristan by Gottfried von Strassburg, The Hollow Men and Four Quartets by T.S. Eliot, Undine Geht by Ingeborg Bachman, Parsifal by Wolfram von Eschenbach and Finnegans Wake by James Joyce (among others). The Performers rediscover the myth through physical actions, monologues and songs. The Swinging Door explores matters of sex and gender, personal mythology, the living and the dead. It is a Performance in body and voice which, intones the lives of Faraone and Rose. The performers are ‘bridge-builders’, moving to and fro, from within themselves to the other. This rhythm of give and take, this swinging door is a bridge to independence as they share that breath we all require. The performers plough, ransack and revel through the landscape of their lives. They shed layers of dead skin through actions with objects: wood, stone, soft metal, water and the touch of clothing in a world where the performers are in contact, sharing. Rose and Faraone reveal the urgency and ritual of the myth within themselves. They share this revelatory energy as a call to create.

A lighthearted look at everyday existence. Neighbors, spouses, lovers... The relationships and rituals we live through everyday but magnified to grandiose tableaux. A somewhat iconic and voyeuristic travel through the uncelebrated minutiae that defines our daily lives. Featuring Joshua Busick, Peter Hogan, Kimberly Lesik & Darcy Trunzo. Films by Tyler Jensen. Performed at Bryant-Lake Bowl Theater, March 6th, 13th & 20th, 2009.

On September 19, 2012 I was invited by professor Alan Mette (U of I) to speak to a group of art foundation students on the theme: What is art education? I asked the students to share a story about one of their most influential teachers (in school or otherwise). I asked them to share these stories aloud and to do so in a continuous loop for more than ten minutes. I asked the students to share all their narratives simultaneously. I walked in between the students and amplified small slivers of their narratives with a handheld microphone. Afterwards I proposed that the students think about art education in three ways: 1. As material. And I encouraged them to play with it. 2. As relationships, something their own words attested to. I pointed to the materiality of closeness and how artists now work through this idea. 3. As a durational work/task that sometimes can only be seen in parts. I proposed that the invisibility of art education (or education as a creative practice) heightened its potential for generosity.

TinPan Orange have been busy on both the touring circuit and the festival circuit. The very first time a Your Take Sessions crew member saw them was at Woodford Folk Festival earlier this year when they played to thousands of people under The Grande tent. When you listen to this song, you can see why they appeal so much to anyone. Even though the band had been travelling since 4 am and were seriously sleep deprived, they took some time in their arvo to chat with us about their up and coming album and then spin us one of the tracks that will probably appear on it. http://www.facebook.com/YourTakeSessions Producer/Sound Recordist: Sam Wright Director/Editor/Camera 1: Kieran Ellis-Jones Journalist/Camera 2: Thom Miles Sound Mixer: Ben Dring
