Single shot video documentation of the screen - a few minutes near the start. Recorded at Never or Now Festival, Bergen, Jan 2011 Cipher Screen is a live art piece using 2 prepared 16mm film projectors with black film loops and a live sound feed. This work harnesses the mechanisms of film and cinema; the projector, the film material, the darkened room and synchronized sound - creating a live score and a visual and sonic interaction. The constant, reductive physical process applied to the surface of the film loops results in a slow transformation on the screen surface; out of aural and visual darkness builds a cacophonous crescendo of sound and image. A collaborative project by Zehra Khan and Tim Winn. Artists Tim and Zehra were offered a week of rustic living in a shack tucked in the isolated sand dunes of Provincetown. But before embarking on their adventure, they overheard one of the shack caretakers say they had to check out “the weasel problem”. This raised lots of questions for them. The weasel problem? There are weasels living there? What are these weasels doing? What problems are they causing? The weasel problems are many. Their naughty, playful relationship is as rickety as the shack. Is their aggressive behavior a desperate plea for attention and love; will their innate mischief erode the foundation of their trust? Navigating a harsh existence less frequently found in contemporary America, they exist without electricity, plumbing, or couples counseling. And they have plenty of problems. Tim and Zehra show us footage of the weasels in their natural habitat. A film and photographs document the costumed artists running wild in the Provincetown landscape. BIOGRAPHY The Weasel Problem is another example of collaborative work by Tim Winn and Zehra Khan. They have exhibited together at the Worcester State University, the Cape Cod Community College, and Gallery Ehva in Provincetown. Upcoming exhibitions include solo shows at UMass Amherst, UMass Lowell, and the Chazan Gallery in Providence, RI. Tim is featured in 2011 New American Paintings – Northeast Edition, and is part of the Boston Drawing Project at Carroll & Sons, and Zehra is part of the NYC Drawing Center’s Viewing Program. They are both Provincetown residents. To see more of Tim & Zehra's collaborative work, visit www.winnkhan.com
