Part 9 of the Arctic System Science Thermokarst Project / APECS Introduction to Changing Permafrost in the Arctic Landscape Online Course. Presenters: --- George Kling, University of Michigan This webinar series takes an interdisciplinary look at permafrost and thermokarst dynamics in Alaska's North Slope. It is designed for an audience from a broad range of backgrounds including physical, biological, and social sciences in order to take a holistic look at changes in the terrestrial arctic system. Topics covered include: an overview of permafrost and thermokarst, impacts of thawing permafrost on people, geomorphology, soils and microbes, and arctic vegetation, streams, and lakes. Scientists from Universities in Fairbanks, Florida, and Saskatchewan met with fire managers and resource specialists to share early results from a study called Identifying Indicators of State Change and Forecasting Future Vulnerability in Alaskan Boreal Ecosystems. Dr. April Melvin, a University of Florida postdoctoral associate, is quantifying carbon loss from the soil organic layer in managed sites like thinned and shearbladed hazard fuel treatments. In the first talk (this video) she discusses effects of fire on vegetation, carbon storage and permafrost thaw.

This is a video taken outside Fort Good Hope, NWT. It shows the impact higher temperatures are having on permafrost and the river bank. You clearly see areas where the bank has fallen into the river. There are only two such areas shown on this video however this problem can be witnessed on riverbanks all over the area.
