Puno is home to Lake Titicaca. Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world at about 3,812 m / 12,500 ft, about the size of USA’s state of Connecticut. The border of Peru and Bolivia cuts through the middle of Lake Titicaca. Puno is a trilingual city where people speak Spanish, Quechua, and Aymara. The people of Lake Titicaca live on artificial floating islands made from reeds. They were called the Uros people by the ancient Inca. The Uros have intermarried with the people of Puno and speak mainly Aymara and Quechua. Lake Titicaca tours consist of trips to Taquile Island and the Uros Islands as well. The Inca believed that they were born from the first Sapa Inca king and son of the Sun, Manco Capac, which walked out of Lake Titicaca near Puno. The Inca worshiped the Sun as their god. Manco Capac expanded the Inca Empire within the territory of the ruling Aymara culture which still exists today in Puno. A Puno tour is a great vacation to experience the Inca culture from Cusco and Machu Picchu. Puno hotels range in class from backpacker to tourist to luxury. http://www.karikuy.org The biggest domestic match in Peru is played between Universitario de Deportes and Alianza Lima, a rivalry that dates back to 1928. As with other South American Super Classicos, the match is a quite physical and intense spectacle with both sides giving their all to become the winners. The fans can at times be even more fueled with passion and violence sometimes breaks out. The last Super Classico was on March 15th 2009 with Universitario defeating Alianza Lima 1-0 in Alianzas own Stadium.

http://www.karikuy.org Caral is one of the most ancient cities of the America's and possibly of the entire world, and is a well-studied site of the Norte Chico civilization. As more of the city's secrets are uncovered, archaeologists at the ruins are pressing to make it one of Peru's top tourist attractions. Caral was inhabited between roughly 2600 BCE and 2000 BCE, enclosing an area of 66 hectares. Caral was described by its excavators as the oldest urban center in the Americas, a claim that was later challenged as other ancient sites were found nearby. In this video Julio climbs up the nearby mountain to get a better view of the site. To read more about Caral and the Backpacker Tariy Series visit http://www.karikuy.org/blog .
