Internationally acclaimed writer and director Sulayman Al Bassam in conversation with his collaborator Georgina Van Welie on making theatre across the cultural divide. Political by definition, performed in both English and Arabic with actors and a creative team from across the Arab world and the West, their projects have revisited Western texts from an Arab perspective and challenged Western perceptions of the Arab world. They will discuss their ten year Arab Shakespeare project, a recent production for The Comedie Francaise in Paris and Sulayman’s new play "The Petrol Station." The new play follows the lives of a pair of half-brothers as they vie for the loyalty and favors of their aging father, all against the backdrop of a vicious civil war of a neighboring country.

Shell asked us to create a short animated documentary that showcases the changes to the Shell Select brand and shop format in the past 34 years. After weeks of research we had gathered archive material including sketches, photography and architectural drawings and then began to craft the story with an aim to highlight their progress and innovation in the sector. The final piece has been released to their community of suppliers and is used as presentation tool for engagement with different markets.

Building on consumer insights we developed the brand strategy for the new Shell RVI (retail visual identity). The concept was expressed across global formats, from motorway stop-offs to unmanned sites, through to individual product brands on the forecourt – Select shop, car wash, fuel grades. Our on going work with the Shell convenience retail team won us a recent DBA Silver Award. A thorough understanding of the customer mission when stopping at a forecourt shop has been central to the design development.

Small Talk Two screen video with stereo sound, 8 mins, 2010. This two screen work builds on a fascination with a petrol station on the A167 which the artist filmed in 2001 whilst completing an artist’s residency in Durham. The work is also inspired by the final scene from Jacques Demy's film 'The Umbrella's of Cherbourg', a meeting at a petrol station heavy with regret and charged with the remains of a love that has been lost. The footage on one screen is of the petrol station shot in 2001, on the other screen are the same views re-shot nine years later. The subtitles on each screen appear to be having a sardonic conversation with each other about fonts, the weather, the passing of time, music and silence, why an artist would want to remake a video work nine years after making it, personal and artistic regret, and failure. Originally commissioned by Durham Art Gallery with funds from Arts Council England.

Winxo is the new name of Moroccan petroleum group CMH (Compagnie Marocaine d’Hydrocarbures) with ambitious plans to grow and to diversify into new innovative businesses outside its traditional business of distribution of petroleum products. Research revealed that a bold reimaging of its forecourt was necessary to seriously challenge incumbents Shell, Total and Afriquia. Additionally, it was decided that CMH should develop a new and unique shop concept across its network of approximately 200 retail sites. To help convey the new reality, CMHand invited Minale Tattersfield in 2010 to develop the brand, especially the three dimensional aspects. The resulting architectural forms of the forecourt derived from the soft organic logo shapes are just as radical as the renaming. CMH decided to stay with Minale Tattersfield for the TV launch campaign which would be filmed out in Casablanca. Being a familiar movie location, it was not difficult to find a competent local film production team to work with Minale Tattersfield’s own directors, producers and creatives, and to put together a compelling campaign; the narrative centres around the petals of the logo and their magic quality.
