The Edinburgh International Festival in association with BBC Scotland and Screen Academy Scotland, selected four filmmakers and four composers to create four short films as part of a Masterclass with Philip Glass. The only stipulations were the length (5min) and that the starting point was to take inspiration from the Qatsi Trilogy. My idea was to use 'the raingame' - a children's game that mimics the sound of a rainstorm - as inspiration for the images and sound. The film was a collaboration with the composer and musician, Jordan Gilmore and we approached it as an experiment in playing with the relationship between image, sound and music. 9.53 min. (excerpt 2.51 min.) A film by Sophie van der Burg Music Philip Glass distorted by Sophie van der Burg 2008 You look at the shadow of a woman dancing, The viewer has an important role in this film, with the frame I created a way of seeing which makes it more voyeuristic. You look at her uncertain is she knows you do, you are observing something which might not be yours to see, but in the same time it seems she want you to see her. It plays with beauty and intimacy as well as distance and observation.

Widely credited as one of the greatest artistic achievements of the 20th century, the rarely performed avant-garde opera Einstein on the Beach revolutionized theater, dance and performance. Its legendary, pioneering creators, director Robert Wilson and composer Philip Glass, discuss the initial imagining of this groundbreaking collaboration, the creative process and its trajectory. The conversation will be led by Anne Bogart, the Artistic Director of the New York-based SITI Company and a renowned theater director in her own right. Co-sponsored by the University Musical Society (UMS) and the U-M Museum of Art (UMMA) and Living Arts. Part of Pure Michigan Renegade. This lecture took place on January 15, 2012 as part of the University of Michigan School of Art & Design's Penny W. Stamps Distinguished Speaker Series. Established with the generous support of alumna Penny W. Stamps, the Speaker Series brings respected emerging and established artists/designers from a broad spectrum of media to the School to conduct a public lecture and engage with students, faculty, and the larger University and Ann Arbor communities.
