In this session, a psychotherapist, self-help author and mindfulness expert discuss the different tools associated with self help and present different arguments as to why and how therapy, self-help books, and mindfulness can be helpful. Philippa Perry, psychotherapist and author of the graphic novel 'Couch Fiction' discusses the importance of the 'relationship' in therapy, and how the relationship with your therapist can be used to build new neural pathways, echoing the process of relationship forming you learned from your earliest care giver. Robert Kelsey, former investment banker, entrepreneur and author of new self-help book 'What's Stopping You' talks about his experience of how he came to write a self-help book and the context of the genre in the UK. Ed Halliwell, mindfulness expert and author of 'The Mindful Manifesto' discusses the dangers of self-help and fixation on the 'self' in the search for happiness, and describes how mindfulness as a means of coping with our fears and anxieties is an effective tool. Chaired by Oliver Burkeman. The Self-Help Summit took place on Saturday 15 January 2011 at The Town Hall Hotel, Bethnal Green, London
