The project explores our relationship with devices and technology by examining the multi-dimensionality of communication and the complexity of social behavior and interaction. In its essence, the project functions as a piece of design fiction, considering the fluctuating nature of our present engagement with media technology and providing futurist imaginings of other ways of being. -- Curious Displays (2009) is a product proposal for a new platform for display technology. Instead of a fixed form factor screen, the display surface is instead broken up into hundreds of ½ inch display blocks. Each block operates independently as a self-contained unit, and has full mobility, allowing movement across any physical surface. The blocks operate independently of one another, but are aware of the position and role relative to the rest of the system. With this awareness, the blocks are able to coordinate with the other blocks to reconfigure their positioning to form larger display surfaces and forms depending on purpose and function. In this way, the blocks become a physical embodiment of digital media, and act as a vehicle for the physical manifestation of what typically exists only in the virtual space of the screen. Traditionally, displays are fixed-size/ratio surfaces that provide an entry point to a defined experience with digital media content. This content is varied--informational, filmic, auditory, at times even spatial. However, the relationship between the user and the digital entities within the defined surface of the screen creates a sense of fragmentation between two distinct spaces. The virtual space of the screen provides a surface for media content to come alive, but is a distinct and marked separation from the physical space that the user occupies. Curious Display "blocks" are tangible and tactile. They occupy and move through physical space, and are thus subject to the same spatial rules and limitations faced by any other physical objects. These constraints lend themselves to potentially interesting outcomes in terms of interactivity and negotiation. An abundance of questions quickly begin to surface--how do they move? How do they behave? Does this movement and behavior begin to allude to the development of a type of personality? How does one communicate with them? Where do they go when you're not using them? What role do they take on in our daily lives?

            DATAFLUX investigates the possibilities of using live software patches to render synesthetic audio and visual installations. The piece uses a software counting mechanism to step between scenes and sequences. Projections are beamed onto a motorised mirror allowing for wider displacement which is also triggered via the same system. Size and locations for the reshaping white squares are changed on every beat, allowing for the movement streams that you can see, this relocation creates an internal message that allows the software to fluidly render these changes. It is this concept of a hidden working system that I aim to represent with this work. I want to visually represent the mechanics of the software program. As of yet this installation will last one minute twenty before the viewer will be presented with a loop point, however with inclusions such as randomizers and out of phase oscillations there is the possibility of an artificially generated sequence with perpetual transformation. The sound is made up of four pre-rendered two channel linear streams that are re-triggered every 30 seconds, developed in a way to seem to be a more complex live point to point triggering system (the lack of a fully live soundscape was due to lack of developmental time). Heavy sub bass information was present and a strobe effect is also triggered once every 60 seconds. These extreme audiovisual elements were included to heighten the sensory effects the work has on the participant, and to attempt to draw a connection between virtual and physical/environmental intricacies. The installation aims to represent the notion of pushing capacities in order to assist in envisaging further developments. The layout of the pillars are based on the existence of a fixed large pillar located in the centre of the room. I am planning for Engimatica in February to more dynamically represent a digitally choreographed environment. To my indiscretion and perhaps paradoxically, Enigmatica will be made up of a completely pre-rendered looping linear stream, there will be no live software elements. www.kitwebster.com

              Urbandaddy asked us to create an installation for the E2NY Music and Arts festival this summer. We proposed a head to head bike race inspired by Goldsprints, but with more of a design focus. We mapped forests, foxbears and orbs to the speed of the bikes, giving the riders a sense of their speed. Riders face off against friends, enemies and strangers to see who can ride the farthest in 60 seconds. The faster the cyclist, the more environments and creatures they unlock. A lucky few even made it into space, and one guy puked.

                The arrangement includes six exceptional exhibits from the world of sounds and acoustics. At first sight looking trivial, each object incorporates a very unique ability. The magical character of each object is accompanied with a little story, almost completely concealing the existence of technical components such as speakers or sensors. Only small connection ports as well as the uniform black finishing point to their unusual abilities. Processing is used for recording live audio input, modifying the playback and generating digital sound according to sensor data. In form and functionality all these exhibits pursue John Maeda’s „Simplicity“.                   The installation Type Case is a low-resolution display with 125 rectangular pixels of different sizes. These are formed from the reflecting light of digitally controlled LEDs, embedded in each section of a European printers’ type case. Due to the standardized fragmentation of its compartments, the density of visual information is decreased towards the objects’ centre. Viewed close by, it is nearly impossible to recognize more than a flicker – however after moving some distance away, it becomes distinguishable, that the lights and shadows give a representation of the latest headlines.                     In an effort to establish new platforms for public art and performance, the multimedia duo SWEATSHOPPE has developed a new interactive technology that enables them to explore the relationship between video, mark making and architecture. Dubbed "video painting", this technology allows them to essentially "paint" video onto any surface. Shooting in Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan, the duo spent weeks documenting their work in urban settings to create "The Landing" the first in a series of episodes that showcases their work as artist, technologist and performers.
