Professor Carolin Crawford answers every question you've ever had about the most romantic stellar bodies, the stars: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/the-lives-of-stars Stars are an ubiquitous feature of our local Galactic environment. They do not last forever -- but form, develop and evolve over timescales of millions or billions of years, eventually to expire in dramatic style. We look at the lifecycles of different kinds of stars, and in particular, what they reveal about our own origins. The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/the-lives-of-stars Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. This tradition continues today with all of our five or so public lectures a week being made available for free download from our website. There are currently over 1,500 lectures free to access or download from the website. Music video by VJ Elfmaster for Pupillary Response by Distant System. The majority of the graphics in this video are original creations, and are fairly representative of a live VJ set. This mix features my Quartz Composer 3D graphics along with a ton of actual galactic imagery. Video created with Resolume Arena VJ software, Quartz Composer, Adobe Flash, and After Effects. After Effects was used to create the final mix, with only minimal adjustments applied in post-production. Visit the Distant System website at www.distantsystem.info, or to learn more about the cosmos, visit my astronomy class portal at www.galaxyclass.org.

            from Millmark Education / Added

Here are words that will be helpful to students doing a hands-on science inquiry to research stars at various stages in the star life cycle and share their findings using a jigsaw format. They relate their findings to the Essential Question: How do stars change throughout their life cycles?

This pan video shows a close-up of a new ESO Very Large Telescope image of the planetary nebula Fleming 1 in the constellation of Centaurus (The Centaur). This striking object is a glowing cloud of gas around a dying star. New observations have shown that it is likely that a very rare pair of white dwarf stars lies at the heart of this object, a fact that can fully explain the remarkably symmetric structures of the jets in the surrounding gas clouds. This video sequence starts with a broad panorama of the Milky Way and closes in on the small constellation of Scutum (The Shield), home to many star clusters. The final detailed view shows the strange green planetary nebula IC 1295 in a new image from ESO’s Very Large Telescope. This faint object lies close to the brighter globular star cluster NGC 6712. This video starts with a wide field view of the spectacular southern part of the Milky Way. We close in gradually on a small bubble of glowing gas in the constellation of Centaurus (The Centaur). This is the planetary nebula Fleming 1, glowing gas shells and symmetrical jets around an aging pair of stars. The final detailed view comes from the FORS2 instrument on the Very Large Telescope at ESO’s Paranal Observatory in Chile.
